This is the second of this series that I have read for review. Westphal has done for United States history what she did for Literature. The work is designed so the educator can either use the lesson plans that are provided or use them as a template for their own. This work of Westphal's is designed for 9-12 grade students. The work covers pre-contact up till the nineteen eighties with Ronald Reagan's presidency. Westphal explains how to use the different types of menus that she offers like the Tic-Tac-Toe, Meal, Trading Cards or the popular 20-50-80 and Game Show as well as what she calls Free Choice that is part of each menu she has created. Westphal sets the work to Common Core Standards which can be linked via the presses link included. A short reference section is included as well. Westphal also lays out how to use the menus and how to grade each one. This is a great guide for educators and the cost of $24.95 is easy enough to add to a media center resource shelf. It would also serve home educators as well. Another Great work from the Prufrock Press. ( )

Volunteering to assist a friend with tutoring her children American history, I thought this book would assist me in setting up my ‘teaching’ program. It has been a great success and the children are much improved with their history. They are actually enjoying my instruction and i enjoy helping them. This book has given me so great ideas. ( )

Another volume of the Differentiating with Menus series, this time geared towards the history classroom Grades 9-12, although the topics covered include geography, culture, government and economics as well.

As usual, print-ready material for the classroom or the home-school setting is provided, and even if you are unfamiliar with this approach as a teacher, the publication offers everything you need to know to use the material in class and grade the results.

Also as usual, the material is especially useful if your students vary greatly in ability. Using menus you can make sure that the smarter ones can show what they know while slower or less capable students can still master the content and produce something to be proud of. ( )

Menus are a way to give students choices about how they exhibit their learning. The first part of this book discusses the importance of giving student choices, how to use menus, guidelines for student products, and rubrics. In part two of the book the author provides menus covering different historical periods. Each era is the subject of a separate chapter. Chapters address the new world, building a new nation, the Civil War, growth of the United States, and the Cold War to the present. Each chapter includes four to eight menus. With the instructions in part one of the book and the many samples in part two, teachers can create their own menus. The menus in this volume are created for high school students. They could be adapted, however, for college students. This is a useful resource for teachers seeking creative ways to assess student learning. ( )
