A 30 some year old man who thinks he is dying goes on a kidnapping spree to find his perfect family and leaves them locked up in an old farmhouse. The reader cringes as a woman is forced to vow marriage to him in an old wedding dress. He stinks, his teeth are falling out, and his character is quite nightmarish. I admired the determination of the 12 year old girl as she became more of the adult and tried to help them escape. He also kidnaps a handicapped man in place of the brother that he lost at a young age. Once he determines that his "new wife" has been cheating on her real husband, he takes it personally and decides they all need to be together in a final resting place. As the police look for where he may have took them, they live through the biggest nightmare yet and the reader cannot help but imagining the horror they all live through. Great suspense filled story line, even greater, likeable characters, and the chance at finding real happiness at the end. I really enjoyed this book, although it felt kind of sluggish at times. ( )

This is the second book I have read by this author. It is the first stand alone novel. I could see this book though being turned into a movie or expanded as a television series. Due to the dynamics of Forensic psychologist Connie and Detective Inspector Baarda. I liked them both. They really worked well together.

This book shows that you don't always need romance or gruesome violence to write a really good book. The storyline was great and the characters all had distinct voices as were they engaging. Even when I knew who the person was behind the kidnapping, it did not deter me or take away from this overall vibe of the story.

Fergus is an intriguing character. He is the wild card in this story. You never truly knew what he was going to do next. There may have been three victims Meggy, Elspeth, and Xavier but there was truly one superstar. Her name is Meggy. She was the youngest but the fiercest one of them all and my favorite too.

I recommend this book to mystery readers alike. You will become a fan of this author as well. ( )

Well this book definitely gets the heart racing! I couldn’t put this book down and enjoyed the uniqueness of the story - there were conditions that I had never heard of before and it was interesting to learn a bit about them.

The characters are interesting and the pace of the book is perfect - you will find yourselves thinking I’ll read just one more chapter!

I will definitely be looking out for more books by Helen Fields. ( )

I've quite enjoyed Helen Fields' D.I. Callanach series. When I saw she had a new book coming out, I didn't even read the flyleaf description - I just knew I'd be in for another great read. The Shadow Man was amazingly good! It kept me up late frantically flipping pages.....and double checking that the door was locked.

The prologue starts things off with a decidedly morbid scene that sets the pace for the story to come. Fields gives us an unusual protagonist. Dr. Connie Woolwine is an American psychologist and profiler brought in to assist Scottish D.I. Baarda. The search is on for a missing woman, and then another, and then a child and then a man..... Are they connected? Are they alive?

This duo worked really well for me. Woolwine is an unusual woman and her methods are different from what the tightly wrapped Baarda is used to. I enjoyed the banter between the two - it gave them personality and their own storyline in addition to the crime thread. (I would truly like to see more books featuring these two). Woolwine's profile building has the ring of truth to it and is believable. Fields has done her homework here.

The reader is going to know much more than our lead characters do. Fields gives us a (very scary) glimpse into the actions and mindset of the suspect. The Shadow Man's thoughts and actions will give you goosebumps. Fields' description and depiction of him are visceral, unsettling and downright creepy. We are also privy as to what's going on with the victims. I have to say that of the three missing people, young Meggy stole my heart. She's a gutsy little girl faced with the unthinkable. But the others were just as well drawn.

There was more than one time where I thought the story had reached a certain point and was over. But, Fields kept me on my toes with turns I didn't see coming. The action is firmly in the 'edge of your seat' category. And the ending? Crazy good! I could see this book as a movie. ( )

Oh. My. God. This is one amazing and exciting crime thriller. I always know I will get a fantastic read when I pick up a Helen Fields book but The Shadow Man absolutely blew me away.

Fans of the author's Perfect series will know that she created an ideal partnership with Luc Callanach and Ava Turner. I didn't think they could be beaten but along came Dr Connie Woolwine and DI Brodie Baarda and they're absolutely on a par with them in terms of a perfectly written dynamic.

Connie is a fascinating character. Brought over from the US to help profile the person who has kidnapped Elspeth Dunwoody, she's a maverick but highly intelligent forensic psychologist, and she's incredibly well-drawn by the author who has clearly done a lot of research and investigation of her own into the kind of work Connie would do. Put her with the handsome and gallant Baarda and they're a dream team.

Let's not forget the story itself though. It's a masterpiece in originality and plotting, providing numerous heart-pumping experiences. This is a book I really and truly didn't want to put down. Who is this man who steals people in plain sight without a care for who sees him? The reader knows from the beginning but his full story only becomes clear as the book progresses and what an astounding, complex and intense story it is and what an imagination the author has.

The Shadow Man is easily one of my books of the year. It has characters I want to see more of, a jaw-droppingly thrilling storyline, and a setting that jumps off the page. You might have guessed that I absolutely LOVED this book! And Helen Fields……please can we have more Woolwine/Baarda collaborations? ( )
