Can it really be the 17th book in the series? I've read them all and enjoyed them all - some more than others, but as a whole I highly recommend this series - and Mary Russell is one of my favorite characters. In "Castle Shade" Mary is just as clever, assertive, and fearless as ever. Her adventures, as well as her relationship with Sherlock Holmes, kept me turning the pages. And I couldn't stop thinking about the plot and the mystery when I wasn't able to actually sit down and read.

Heads up, though - the book takes about 50 pages to really get going, as author Laurie King spends a longish time at the beginning describing the castle and surrounding area as well as the politics. But it's worth trudging through this section so don't give up.

I especially liked the way King included the theme of fairy tales throughout - Queen Marie grew up loving fairy tales, she is gifted a castle, she has a beautiful young princess daughter, the legends of vampires, witches and magic spells, and other elements are sprinkled throughout that I won't share here since that would give away the mystery - so you'll have to find out for yourself what else is included.

You could read this book without having read the series, but I urge you to definitely pick up the others (and read in order if you can) as the mysteries and the relationship of Russell and Holmes are well-written and cleverly constructed. "Castle Shade" is an exciting and satisfying read. ( )

Slow to start but another enjoyable entry into the Russell/Holmes series. ( )

I almost gave up reading CASTLE SHADE because I really am not interested in reading about vampires and ghosts. I am glad I continued because they really do play a necessary role in this book as an explanation for some of the characters’ actions.
Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are enroute to Roumania on a mission to save the daughter of Queen Marie. Through her marriage, Marie, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, has brought the country into the modern world.
The queen’s favorite home is Bran, an ancient fortress standing high on the rocks overlooking the border between Roumania and Transylvania, which is described in great deal. The people are love her and she likes her close relationship with them, many of them on a personal level.
But recent incidents remind many of the villagers of the threat of vampires. When the daughter is threatened, Holmes is called in to save her.
CASTLE SHADE provides an interesting picture of Bran and its environment as well as of the people, their relationships, customs, and lives. ( )

Mary Russell has been persuaded by her husband Sherlock Holmes to join him at Castle Bran in Transylvania, Roumania to help figure who is threatening Queen Marie and her daughter. Are the threats political or personal? Is the Castle and its staff involved or just bystanders? Are the images portrayed in Stoker's Dracula real or just being used to make the villagers and surrounding countryside nervous hostile? Will the Queen been driven away or worse?

It was so interesting to see the Transylvanian village both support their Queen while at the same time bee overcome by the superstitions of their ancient folklore. Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes never fail to solve the issues being addressed, but this time they also started addressing issues of their own.

Looking forward to Mycroft's reactions! ( )
