Fiction. Short Stories. HTML:

With his elegant prose and perceptive imagination, the bestselling author of The Crimson Petal and the White creates a unique, self-contained world, where the perennial human drama plays out in all its passion and ambiguity. In these acclaimed novellas, Michel Faber takes on the interior world of inventively crafted characters. "The Courage Consort" tells of an a capella vocal ensemble sequestered in a Belgian chateau to rehearse a monstrously complicated new piece. But competing artistic temperaments and sexual needs create as much discordance as the avant-garde music. In "The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps," a lonely woman joins an archaeological dig at Whitby Abbey and unearths a mystery involving a long-hidden murder. In "The Fahrenheit Twins," strange children, identical in all but gender and left alone at the icy zenith of the world by their anthropologist parents, create their own ritual civilization.

The Courage Consort by Michel Faber - Very Good

Difficult to find what to say about this book. It is, of course, Michel Faber so therefore it is a beautifully written and interesting book but, unlike so much of his other work, nothing much happens.

The Courage Consort are an a cappella group heading off to a Belgian Chateau to rehearse a difficult new piece. Written in the voice of Catherine, a lot of the thread is about her problems and her personal growth. There are the interactions of and with the others in the group, but that's about it. A lot about personal discovery, but not a lot of 'story'.

Regardless, a lovely little book and a very quick read. Really glad I read it. ( )

I don't know. I love this author. and even though i've read this book, i keep forgetting that i have read it, pick it up again, and get flustered because i discover i've read it before. so i guess that means it's not that good. because even as i write this, i can't tell you what the novella's about. or the stories. The Courage Consort, "possibly the seventh best-known a cappella vocal ensemble in Britain", are holed up in a rural Belgian château to rehearse the most complicated piece they've ever had to perform: Partitum Mutante. Forced to co-exist under the same roof for the first time, egos begin to clash and minds begin to fray. Relationship break down, strange allegiances form and... is that a ghost wailing in the woods?

Michel Faber's wonderfully observed satirical novella does for avant-garde classical music what Spinal Tap did for heavy rock. Although it's a short book, every sentence is a gem.
