Loved the story and the characterizations against the intense historical backdrop. An emotional journey of loss, survival and closure . Sitara, the protagonist , and her story stays with you long after you finish reading . Another gem from one my favorite authors , this novel does not disappoint. Definitely recommended reading. Thank you Goodreads for the ARC! "I had always been my father's spirited girl, the child who had grown up in the halls of the palace. But the absence of my family made me reconsider who I was. If it hadn't been for my father's outstretched arms, perhaps I never would have dared to leap from the sofa cushions. If it hadn't been for my mother's applause, I might not have dared to dance in our living room. I only moved as boldly through the world as I had because I knew they would catch me, no matter how far I fell." I listened to this book about a child who loses her family in the 1966 coup in Afghanistan. Ariana’s story of leaving Afghanistan and her journey to America and her healing is a very interesting and heartwarming story. As an adult she searches for the graves of her family. It’s a well written journey. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
"Kabul, 1978: The daughter of a prominent family, Sitara Zalmani lives a privileged life in Afghanistan's thriving cosmopolitan capital. The 1970s are a time of remarkable promise under the leadership of people like Sardar Daoud, Afghanistan's progressive president, and Sitara's beloved father, his right-hand man. But the ten-year-old Sitara's world is shattered when communists stage a coup, assassinating the president and Sitara's entire family. Only she survives. Smuggled out of the palace by a guard named Shair, Sitara finds her way to the home of a female American diplomat, who adopts her and raises her in America. In her new country, Sitara takes on a new name - Aryana Shepherd - and throws herself into her studies, eventually becoming a renowned surgeon. A survivor, Aryana has refused to look back, choosing instead to bury the trauma and devastating loss she endured... New York, 2018: Forty years after that fatal night in Kabul, Aryana's world is rocked again when an elderly patient appears in her examination room - a man she never expected to see again. It is Shair, the soldier who saved her, yet may have murdered her entire family. Seeing him awakens Aryana's fury and desire for answers - and, perhaps, revenge. Realizing that she cannot go on without finding the truth, Aryana embarks on a quest that takes her back to Kabul--a battleground between the corrupt government and the fundamentalist Taliban - and through shadowy memories of the world she loved and lost."--Provided by publisher. I loved being pulled into Kabul of the late 70s and experiencing life through 10-year old Sitara's eyes. I also appreciated getting to know her as an adult, having survived the most harrowing experiences anyone could imagine - and thrived despite them.
Sitara's harrowing search for the truth about her past is profoundly moving. And Hashimi's writing is lyrical and poetic, the perfect counterpoint to the heavy themes addressed in the novel. ( )
