"Fresh out of medical school at the State University of Iowa, the young and dedicated Dr. Edwin D. Frear set out in 1882 to brave the hardships, struggles, and challenges that characterized the life and practice of the country doctor. His practice took him first to Salix and then to Sloan, two small towns set in the wide-open prairie of northwest Iowa. In later years he taught at the medical college and practiced in Sioux City." "As a child the author often accompanied her father on his medical calls; as she grew older she was able to assist him in his office. This book is largely an account of her recollections of him and his work, with additional material obtained from his diary and other personal and general sources. While some details have been changed, every incident described is based on an actual experience of the doctor or his family." "Capturing a bit of old Americana, Cora Frear Hawkins takes the reader back to the turn of the century - to the favorite old horse and buggy and the first automobiles and rural telephones. Through prairie blizzards and floods, in quarantines and the lighthearted antics of the doctor's children, you will delight in the adventures of a pioneer doctor's life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. I thoroughly enjoyed "Buggies, Blizzards and Babies", a memoir about E D Frear as written by his daughter and published in 1971. Set primarily in Iowa, the daughter, Cora, recounts her memories of helping her father and other stories of his days as a country doctor from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. This is a sweet, sentimental story that kept me entranced from beginning to end. In the vein of "Little House on the Pairie", this is not a scholarly work but rather a family story told in common terms. I will be passing this book around to others that I think will enjoy the story, too. ( )

1611 Buggies, Blizzards, and Babies, by Cara Frear Hawkins (read 2 Jan 1981) This is a laudatory book about Dr. Edwin Frear, who practiced in Sloan, Iowa, and Sioux City, Iowa, from 1882 to about 1924, written by his daughter. But I found the book touching and I was moved at times by the good sentimentality in the book, though at times the book was rather pedestrian. It is a good book for the people who knew the doctor, but not otherwise likely to be read by many. ( )
