Frankie Elkin, an alcoholic and long-suffering self-hater, spends her days searching for missing people. No, she's not a cop, doesn't carry a gun, or has any special skills. But she does have street smarts and a lot of bravado. Why does she risk her life trying to find people she's never met? That's for the reader to figure out, but I think she's punishing herself for past sins. The story is exciting but repetitive and not wholly believable. If the plots get better, I believe Frankie is a compelling enough character to deserve further interest. ( )

Racist. Classist. Cliche. Queerbaiting. Copaganda. How is this a 2021 bestseller? Are there really that many conservative white women who read books? I stuck with it because I thought the problematic elements would go away eventually, because there is a decent mystery and character underneath, but the problems just get worse. ( )

Before She Disappeared (Frankie Elkin, #1) By Lisa Gardner

A fascinating, compelling story moving at a steady pace. With attention to detail, engaging dialog and a likable female protagonist. Frankie is a middle-aged (recovering) alcoholic. She is battling her inner demons, yet she is determined to make a difference in the world. She searches for missing people, those the rest of society seems to have forgotten .

Tension slowly rise, secrets come to surface, as Frankie slowly uncovers the truth. Thought provoking intriguing, emotional. I was hooked from the first page until the last. Lisa Gardner knows how to grab your attention and bring you deep into the story. Overall I found Before She Disappeared enjoyable , I highly recommend to all. ( )

Just because the book was somewhat self-aware of Frankie's white saviourism, doesn't take away from the fact that it's literally about a white woman who saves the day in a predominantly Haitian immigrant community. It just wasn't very realistic, the characters were so one-dimensional that calling them characters is a bit of a stretch (like, we have one recovering alcoholic who can't stay in one place, one hardass bar-owner, an "astute" teenage boy who is wiser than his years, and the older sister caretaker figure). Even the cat had no personality. It literally ends with "I am who I am sux 2 suck" (i.e., no character development). ( )
