It is London, 1816 and Captain Gabriel Lacey, home from war, it caught in a mob in Hanover Square, where he rescues the leader. Then he learns of a missing girl and her maid, which leads to murder and corruption.
Looking forward to reading more in the series. ( )

First in a series, the focus is on a captain in London who survived the Napoleonic wars, only to find himself without means and work -- but he is very good at figuring out murder mysteries. ( )

This was an enjoyable historical mystery. The writing was good. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships added interest. The pace, plot and setting worked well. ( )

Captain Gabriel Lacey has returned from the Napoleonic Wars with a limp and suffering from bouts of melancholia. When he is embroiled in a riot in Hanover Square and a man is shot in front of him, Lacey finds his sense of honor engaged in helping the man and his family. The man, Mr. Thornton, is protesting at the house of a prominent man who he believes has abducted his daughter, Jane.
I found this an interesting read in the vein of the Sebastian St Cyr mysteries which I love. It is a mystery set in Regency England, and the author does a good job of recreating that setting.
I didn't take to the characters as much; most are cardboard cutouts without much background to interest the reader. Perhaps later in the series, we'll find out more about them. I found Grenville the most interesting of the supplementary characters.
Lacey himself I didn't find all that likable. He's hot-tempered which along with the melancholia and his somewhat hound-dog view of women irritated me. But I'm willing to give him another chance as the mystery was good. ( )

What a quick read! A bit dark, but very enjoyable.

I first read Gardner by reading the recently published [b:Death Below Stairs|34927953|Death Below Stairs (Kat Holloway Mysteries, #1)|Jennifer Ashley|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1498803314s/34927953.jpg|48475794] (writing as Jennifer Ashley), set in Victorian London. Absolutely loved it, and decided to try some of her other books, to keep me until the next Kat Halloway book is available.

There are more than a few mysteries in this book, as well as some unresolved back story with Captain Lacey and other characters, and I look forward to continuing my acquaintance with them in the remaining books of the series. Captain Lacey is just so likable. Not perfect, and not entirely stable, but someone I would love to count as a friend. Can not wait to see what happens next!

Luckily, Ashley is continuing both series, as well as a third series set in first century AD Rome - [b:Blood Debts|35650536|Blood Debts (Leonidas the Gladiator Mysteries #1)|Ashley Gardner|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1499745174s/35650536.jpg|57101471].

A perfect blend of mystery and historical fiction, with hints that romance will make an appearance in future books. Highly recommended. ( )
