I'm in the rather large boat of people who were quite enjoying this until some sketchy events near the end. Characters in books often make huge mistakes, but there are some lines the heroes/heroines just shouldn't cross, and if they do, there should be significant consequences for those actions. And all of it should be conveyed in a way that makes it clear to readers that those actions were indeed very messed up. Here, it's largely missing the consequences, and I feel like that allows many readers to shrug off the actual manipulation/abuse of trust/selfishness/etc. displayed. It had some very enjoyable parts, but overall I'm disappointed in those choices (by the character and author). It's unfortunate that it's the one setting up the whole series. ( )

I'm going to be honest. I went into this book having only watched the first two episodes of the Netflix show. I also decided that I needed a cheesy romance novel in my life and thought this book would be a good fit. The first half of the book was just what I was expecting. It was cheesy and sweet and fun to listen to. Also, Rosalyn Landor does a great job with her narration of the audiobook. Then the second half of the book began and it took a twist I was not okay with. Honestly, I found myself finding this book less than okay starting after the dual was confirmed between Simon and Anthony. This is why I bumped this rating down to two stars. There is a situation between Simon and Daphne that was just not okay in the slightest, and it honestly was just pushed off to the side as if it weren't despicable. If you don't want spoilers, stop reading this review now! Daphne rapes Simon and tries to become pregnant with his child when he clearly is in the wrong state of mind (he is drunk during the scene) and cannot consent. This is something that I found rather disturbing as it just is brushed aside and blamed on her ignorance. She knew he didn't want kids. She knew he was drunk. She knew he couldn't say no in his state. She did it anyway. Overall, I was highly disappointed with this book. ( )

The first part in the story of the Bridgerton siblings: Daphne and the Duke of Hastings. A fun read - I read it after watching season 1 on Netflix. Made more fun by group chats with work friends who are also reading! ( )

3,5 wegen der viel diskutierten und sehr unschönen Szene. ( )

Book one in the Bridgertons series. First, I’ll note that I have not seen any of the TV miniseries episodes, so had little idea of why it (and the Bridgerton family) is so popular. Now I do.

This was everything a regency romance should be. There is a young marriageable lady in need of a husband, an aloof, dashingly handsome but rakish duke, and enough sexual tension and plot twists to keep things interesting and the pages turning.

Daphne Bridgerton is the fourth child and eldest daughter of Lady Violet and the late Lord Edmund Bridgerton. She’s attractive and accomplished but doesn’t seem to attract the attention of eligible bachelors. Oh, they like her well enough, she’s friends will almost everyone, but no one seems to be falling in love with her. Could it be that her three older brothers are scaring them off? Enter Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, a confirmed bachelor recently returned to England from several years abroad. He’s determined to shun marriage and society in general, until he meets up with his best friend, Anthony Bridgerton and his charming sister, Daphne. Before they’ve shared even two dances, Daphne and Simon have agreed to fake an attachment so that they can each avoid the majority of the season’s requirements. But their plan doesn’t quite work out the way they intended.

I was charmed by both of them, though I thought some of Simon’s backstory was pretty melodramatic. Still, it served the purpose and I enjoyed watching the two of them work through the obstacles to achieve their happily ever after. I may actually watch the TV adaptation now. ( )
