Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town's marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn't as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry--though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon's heart beating a bit faster. And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that is seems a duke has declared her desirable. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, she soon forgets that their courtship is a complete sham. And now she has to do the impossible and keep herself from losing her heart and soul completely to the handsome hell-raiser who has sworn off marriage forever!… (mais)

Recently, I came across “Bridgerton” on Netflix and - much to the dismay of my family - I really enjoyed it. Now, what would be more sensible than to look for the “source material”?

So I did and was somewhat mystified why, at the time of writing this, “The Duke and I” only features an average score of 3.87. Looking into this made it obvious that one scene from the Netflix series was based on something many reviewers considered a “rape scene”.

Fully expecting this to be exaggerated, I started reading - and found myself enjoying things very much: The chemistry between Daphne and Simon that permeates the entire book and that has been transformed so nicely to the TV screen, the bantering, the family - everything was pretty much great.

If you like romance (I certainly do! :) ), tinged with fictitious history (I do enjoy a good historical novel at times as well), you can hardly go wrong. Then came that scene…

I don’t want to dive into it in any detail or argue in any direction but, yes, that scene left a bitter taste. Especially since Daphne fluctuates between regret and justification of what she did.
It did mar my enjoyment of this otherwise very amusing, quick and easy read to some extent.

Everything that came after was slightly tainted even though Quinn makes things work between Daphne and Simon and at least this reader. Your mileage may vary.

A slightly guilty-feeling four stars out of five.

I'm not one to read historical romances. It's not usually my cup of tea. But ever since I watched the show, I wanted to dig my hands and eyes on this book and find, for myself, if this could be a new genre to get sucked into.

I got to admit, that the show was incredibly good at recreating all the scenes - although sometimes it had a different scenery or the characters were described differently on the book. That being said, I did enjoy the show a lot more.

I don't think the book is bad. Not at all. The story is great, I love the characters and I think the descriptions were very well captured. But I had some issues with the scene that comes later on in the book where Daphne does something very questionable to Simon. Aside from that, I also feel like the book is good to pass time but it's not something I would reread in the future.

But for those who are very keen on historical romances, I guess this is very fitting for you! Like I said, the story was great and so were the characters so if you're into all that, then what's there not to love? ( )

i read this book in one night. couldnt seem to put it down. there was a part when daphne did smething less tha honorable. something pretty desperate and reprehensible actually. it threw me for a few. i decided i like it. too many romance novels portray women as weak paragons of virtue. daphne, after this thing she did, well she seemed to me more realistic. i wouldnt have done what she did but i understand why she did it. i understand how she could have felt itwas the right thing to do. it actually made me question hiw far i would go to get what i want...and that has never once happened o me whil reading a romance.

Very readable and fun to read. Total mishmash historical, and it uses what is a truly horrific childhood to continually throw wrenches in the relationship which should have been see, grab, hold. And then banishes the the consequences of the childhood when the page count was adequate. ( )
