Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain's defense by taking to the skies ... not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future--and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France's own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte's boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.… (mais)

  1. 256
Master and Commander de Patrick O'Brian (lorax)
lorax: The Napoleonic Wars, just with no dragons. Better-written than Hornblower and with much stronger characterization.
  2. 122
    Dragonflight de Anne McCaffrey (justjukka)
justjukka: Both Novik and McCaffrey take great care in developing the worlds for their respective series. If you like one, you may very well like the other.
  3. 92
Mr. Midshipman Hornblower de C. S. Forester (DWWilkin)
DWWilkin: If you like the time period, no better way to start then with the first popular series about Age of Sail
  4. 71
Leviathan de Scott Westerfeld (PghDragonMan, Caramellunacy)
Caramellunacy: Both are alternate history/fantasy novels with a distinct nautical flair. His Majesty's Dragon is set during the Napoleonic Wars - just with dragons (obviously) as a sort of Air Navy - complete with crew. Leviathan is set during an alternate WWI between the Darwinists (who have living ships & weapons) and the Clankers (who use machines).… (mais)

The Dragon and the George de Gordon R. Dickson (infiniteletters)
  6. 63
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell de Susanna Clarke (ErlendSkjelten)
ErlendSkjelten: Much heavier fare than Temeraire, but all the more enjoyable for it. The Napoleonic wars, with magicians instead of dragons.
  7. 30
    Airborn de Kenneth Oppel (elbakerone)
elbakerone: Another interesting and well written historical fantasy.
  8. 20
    Dragonhaven de Robin McKinley (infiniteletters)

Eon: Dragoneye Reborn de Alison Goodman (notemily)
    notemily: DRAGONS!

  12. 10
Lord of the Changing Winds de Rachel Neumeier (noneofthis)
  13. 10
Midshipwizard Halcyon Blithe de James M. Ward (amysisson)
amysisson: In this case, the dragon *is* the ship, and the main character is younger and less experienced, but otherwise they have a similar feel....

The Dragon and the Thief de Gillian Bradshaw (TomWaitsTables)
  15. 00
Elephant Company: The Inspiring Story of an Unlikely Hero and the Animals Who Helped Him Save Lives in World War II de Vicki Croke (2wonderY)

Dragon Companion de Don Callander (infiniteletters)
  17. 12
Sorcery and Cecelia, or, The Enchanted Chocolate Pot de Patricia C. Wrede (carlyrose)

This book was an absolute guilty pleasure. A quick read; I found myself itching to pull it out at every opportunity and breezing through it.

The dialogue was crisp, the setting unique and rich, and the relationship between several characters namely Laurence, Temeraire, Levitas and Rankin had me invested... even brought a tear to my eye.

I did, sadly, find the writing lacking. The whiplash fast pace of the narration came at the expense of exposition. The lack of physical descriptions turned most characters into caricatures (by about halfway through the book I was resigned to the mental image of Temeraire as 'Toothless' the cartoon dragon).

This book left me craving more depth that I doubt I will find in the rest of the series, but I may seek it out when I'm looking for a palette cleanser. ( )

It would have been hard for me to hate this story as I am a sucker for Dragons. I am also a former tall-ship sailor, so the initial 19th century naval setting of the story (aka Master and Commander style) only added to my enjoyment … provided I suspend a fair amount of disbelief in how much can actually fit on a dragon (think heavily lift helicopter with everything inside sprawled into slings underneath and tents topside). In fact, even the aerial combat was difficult to imagine realistically, so I didn’t even try.

There are two main character here … a human rider, formerly a respected naval officer complete with the snootiness of British upper crust society who frequently and painfully recounts how he has sacrificed what little respect was due him to serve his country as a dragon rider. Other then a grudging respect for his uncompromising morality, he was a total ass; however, Laurence was actually competent and relatively in his dealings with regard to his superiors and subordinates, so I could live with him. The star of the story here was definitely the dragons … or more specifically, Temeraire (his dragon). The author actually developed the draconic personalities well and the growing relationship between rider and dragon fun to explore on multiple fronts. ( )

Enjoyable, but overlong battle scenes.

I read a few of these all in a rush. A bit like potato chips, there were regrets. I did enjoy *all* of the dragons. If only we could lose the pesky humans. ( )

In this world there be dragons. Will Laurence, youngest son of Lord Somebody, is a Captain in the Navy, having fairly recently achieved his own ship. However, in the course of capturing a French vessel, they discover an unhatched dragon egg. Dragons imprint, generally, on the first person they lay eyes on -- nota bene the use of 'generally'. The dragon chooses the reluctant Will (not a spoiler as obviously it will happen from the get-go) and he must abandon his Naval career for the Aeronauts who work with, care for and ride the dragons into battle. The English are fending off Napoleon -- also armed with his own dragons. Oh, and of course, this is no ordinary dragon! I loved it. Novik is meticulous, she captures the mode of speech of that era beautifully, and the characters are delicious, especially the dragons, and especially Temeraire among the dragon. Through hearsay I understand the books falter a bit in the middle (there are quite a few in this series) and then improve again. We shall see. This one gets a five-star salute as I sneaked off to read it with every chance. ***** ( )
