How to categorise this book? Thriller in a way to think of going into the cave in the first place, for me anyway. I knew how the story turned out, but was still fascinated to read about the fortitude of those kids and rescuers. Multicultural in understanding how all of these different countries were represented in the rescue and how they managed to communicate, sometimes very clumsily, and come to a way to work practically the impossible....rescuing all 13 boys from a flooded cave. A middle grade nonfiction book about the twelve Thai boys and their soccer coach being rescued from a local cave in 2018. This is a decent account that manages to make the topic appropriately accessible to the intended audience without talking down to them. There are helpful side bars to explain some of the more technical aspects of cave diving, the rescue, and even things like Buddhist meditation. Definitely recommended for your favorite middle school nonfiction enthusiast. ( )

This was an easy read. The story was written in a simple style. As I was reading it I started to equate the writing to be done in a style to match with my perception of Thai people, calm and easygoing.

There were a ton of photos in the book, it almost seemed like too many.

(Which also means I should have finished reading this a lot faster than I did.)

There were a lot of infographics of the more technical items in the book, like the aspects of cave diving, and medical situations, like hypothermia. These were a nice touch in terms of making the material accessible and understandable to a wide variety of age ranges.

Not a spectacular book or anything, but definitely worth the read.

Drawing on her own cultural knowledge of Thailand and expert research, Christina Soontornvat tells All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys' Soccer Team. Visiting Thailand at the time, Soontornvat struggled with the subtle inaccuracies she saw reported as a result of western media's limited understanding of Thailand's history, culture, and practices. She was compelled to tell the subtleties of the story with the same gripping suspense as she experienced as a first had news observer complete vivid photographs. Soontornvat supports reader's with physical context with maps and geographic diagrams as well as important cultural and background text features to deepen reader's understanding of the cultural context.

On June 23, 2018, 12 young members and the coach of the Wild Boars soccer team were trapped in a cave by rising floodwaters. A harrowing 17 day rescue mission drew rescuers from around the globe trying to find and free the team trapped a half mile below ground. Ultimately the successful rescue is a credit to innovation, cooperation, and perseverance by both the rescuers and the team themselves.

This riveting book recounts the 18-day soccer team rescue from the Thai caves. This book made my stomach turn in knots, but I couldn't look away. The pictures, maps, and graphics are informational and increase the suspense as well as the reader's understanding of the severity of the situation. Along with the rescue, Soontornvat includes information on Buddism, meditation, hypothermia, and the geology of a cave. In the end, this book renews hope in the helping nature of humanity. ( )
