Though the initial plot deals with amnesia, the meat of the book is really about identity, figuring out your authentic self, how past decisions shapes us and our impetus to move forward. I thought this would be a very unoriginal story of a popular girl getting amnesia and then realizing she wants to change her life path and attitudes toward other people. Not at all. it was refreshing that I didn't have it pegged at the beginning. Great characters and I really liked Naomi's struggle to figure out who she really was; she doesn't become a Mary Sue or give up her old lifestyle to become a new perfect person. She falters a lot in her new life and makes a ton of mistakes.

It didn't emotionally resonant as much as Zevin's book Elsewhere, but this was good nonetheless. ( )

A beautiful book that explores the power of memory and self, in a way that made me stop and think many times.

It all began with a coin toss. A coin toss that Naomi loses, leading to her having to back to the yearbook room to get a camera, before slipping and falling on the school steps. When she awakens, a four-year chunk of memory is gone, and Naomi is forced to reexamine every facet of her life. Who was she before the accident? How did she feel about her family, friends, boyfriend, hobbies? And far more importantly, how does she feel now? Because, as Naomi soon discovers, the two are very different. And as she also learns, sometimes losing a fateful coin toss becomes a victory in the larger scope of life.

In a fascinating, eye-opening, and heart-tugging story, Zevin unravels the threads of Naomi's life, loves, and family, connecting past, present, and future together into a tapestry of what it means to be yourself. I loved this novel and all its themes and characters, from the transience of identity and memory, to the power of second chances and the reevaluation of life. Naomi was a real person who was wonderful to follow, somewhat naive without being dumb, dry without overly cynical, confused without being angsty. Her best friend, Will, was without a doubt my favorite secondary character, but all were fully fleshed out. The ending was brilliantly and beautifully ambiguous and realistic, leaving you with a satisfied, almost nostalgic feel and a sensation of hope and faith in life. Simple yet powerful novel I'd recommend to anyone. ( )

'Elsewhere' was a book that stuck into my head long after I had finished it, and Zevin impressed me as an author to keep out an eye, so when I saw this book in the free pile at the Recycling Center I had to snag it.

Amnesia is such an overplayed card in drama that I was skeptical that I would even want to get into this story, but Zevin still remembers how teenagers relate to one another, and never are Naomi's reactions to her condition unconvincing. Her conflicted feelings over her rediscovering her mother's infidelity, her parent's divorce, and her boyfriend, were played out simply, and with a personal honesty that probably could only come from having a few years wiped from your memory.

Reading this made me think of how I would react to my life if I woke up with the past four years gone from my memory, what would I think of my work, my relationships, my friends and family? It's a powerful way to reassess your life and rethink priorities.

I was inordinately excited over their yearbook design - in high school I tried and tried to get support for a white-album style yearbook cover and theme - a buff white cover with the name of the school embossed subtly on the spine and lower front corner. No takers, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who recognized the brilliance of that idea.

Zevin's writing reads with fluid ease, there were no groaner sentences or sentiment. The only hitch was that I got irritated with James. I've worked in a psychiatric unit in the past so I know he was portrayed realistically and sympathetically, I just didn't like him.

Anyway, hopefully Zevin has a long and successful career ahead of her, she certainly deserves one. ( )
