"It's November 1944. Willi Graf, a German rocket engineer, is launching Nazi Germany's V2 rockets at London from Occupied Holland. Kay Connolly, once an actress, now a young English Intelligence officer, ships out for Belgium to locate the launch sites and neutralize the threat. But when rumors of a defector circulate through the German ranks, Graf becomes a suspect. Unknown to each other, Graf and Connolly find themselves on opposite sides in the hunt for the saboteur. Their twin stories play out against the background of the German missile campaign, one of the most epic and modern but least explored episodes of the Second World War. Their destinies are on a collision course."--Publisher description.… (mais)

(2020) A story based on the launchings of the V2 rocket from Belgium into London with devestating effect. From 2 points of view: Kay Caton-Walsh, a WAAF who was initially assigned to photo reconnoissance and later transferred to Belgium to help track the flight paths of V2s launched toward England and Dr. Rudi Graf, one of Werner von Braun's scientists/engineers working on the rockets and their launches. The book ends as the war is ending and these rocket scientists are being rounded up and shipped to the US. Kay does intereview Graf just before he leaves and they discover how closely their lives were inter-twined. KIRKUS: A veteran historical novelist homes in on one of Hitler's last desperate hopes. In 1944, the Nazis know they're losing the war. They'd developed the V1, a pilotless drone bomb its targets could hear coming, and now its successor, which strikes without warning. The Nazis call it Vergeltungswaffen Zwei, Vengeance Weapon Two. The V2 rockets are notoriously unreliable, though. Although they're aimed at Charing Cross Station in the heart of London, any strike within five miles is considered a success. Many hit English neighborhoods, killing dozens of civilians, while others explode at launch or veer off into the sea. Chapters of the novel alternate between the two sides, specifically between German engineers and British intelligence. Twenty-four-year-old intelligence analyst Kay Caton-Walsh is in a married man's bed and survives a direct hit as floors of the building collapse around her. A half dozen people are killed and almost 300 injured. Meanwhile, German engineers work furiously to prepare missiles for launch from Belgium. Despite severe technical problems, they are under great pressure to produce the weapons in the thousands and rush them into service. The story has plenty of interesting details¥for example, the bulk of Germany's potato crop that year had been requisitioned to be distilled into alcohol for use as rocket fuel. British radar can spot the V2s in flight, but ?where exactly were they coming from? That was the mystery.? If only the Brits could look at a rocket's parabola and calculate its point of origin....Caton-Walsh volunteers to help find out: ?I'm good at maths. I know how to use a slide rule.? She joins a team of women working on the problem. Readers may recognize Germany's main rocket engineer, Wernher von Braun. Though he shows necessary fealty to the Nazi cause, his secret dream is to send a rocket to the moon. And if he has to do that from America, that's another story.A short, enjoyable thriller with plenty of well-researched historical nuggets.Pub Date: Nov. 17, 2020ISBN: 978-0-525-65671-5Page Count: 384Publisher: Knopf

This novel is set in 1944 when Hitler's Germany was engaged in a last ditch attempt to hit back at the Allies by targetting England and Antwerp with the second and last weapon in their 'Vengeance' series, the V2 rocket. It is told from the points of view of two characters, Graf, a rocket scientist , and Kay, a photographic interpreter in the Women's Airforce Auxiliary Force (WAAF) who becomes involved in an effort to track and bomb the (mobile) V2 launch sites.

The story is told through current narrative and - mainly Graf's timeline - flashbacks. Through those, which dot around in time, the reader learns of Graf's initial involvement in what was an amateur rocket programme, run by the (real life) von Braun who was obsessed with the idea of going to the moon, which led to the pre-war sponsorship of the German Army and finally the adoption of a full scale programme by Hitler, under the auspices of the SS. Graf has abandoned his youthful dreams of space exploration and is now responsible for overseeing the launches of rockets against London. He is under suspicion by the Gestapo and his increasing disillusionment causes him to risk execution in the hope of passing on intelligence to the resistance.

Meanwhile, Kay survives a V2 strike and volunteers for a posting to Belgium where new improved radar offers a chance of monitoring the same V2 launches, mathematically calculating their trajectory and passing the theoretical launch point to specialist Spitfire squadrons which have been converted to dive bombers.

The best parts of the story for me were the sections from Graf's viewpoint which make it clear that the idealism of space exploration has been twisted into a nightmare of last gasp vengeance against the Allies. Graf and his comrades accept that Germany will lose the war before long, but dare not say so in view of the ever-present threat of the SS. It is clear that rocket production has cost thousands of lives among expendable enslaved "workers" as well as the occasional fatalities from malfunctioning V2s. I wasn't so keen on the tawdry tale of a failed affair with a married man and then casual sex on the behalf of the female protagonist. There was one point where danger threatened her due to this, but it was soon skated over and there was no real tension in that part of the story.

The details given of the rocket construction, production, firing and actual effects were all interesting as was the actual success or lack of it in hitting the launch sites. It was interesting also that both sides had lied to the "workers at the coal face" regarding said success.

I would rate this as a decent page-turning read and therefore a solid 3 star rating. ( )

Historical novel about the V2 rocket program in the waning days of WWII. Harris does a good job of depicting characters and events on both sides, but the German depictions with its technical detail is more interesting.
One of his better novels. ( )

This takes place over five days at the end of Nov 1944 when a devastating weapon, the V2 rocket, was developed. WAAF's are chosen to work in Belgium to try and determine the launch sites so that they can be destroyed. It's an interesting part of the history of WWII but as a novel the plot and characters are a bit flat. Harris wrote many excellent novels, sadly this isn't one of them.

The V2 was built by slave labour and killed more than 20,000 during production. In action, more than 2,700 were killed in London and 1,700 in Antwerp making it less effective than anticipated. ( )
