Lo's intense ambition isn't that relatable or appealing to me; it's obvious it's going to get her into trouble and I don't need the gory details. Plus I have a bunch of other library books I'm excited about. ( ) Bea and Lo Denham lost their parents to a car accident that almost took Lo‘s life, too. Bea finds solace in The Unity Project, a religious cult. When Lo recovers, she only wants her sister back but is soon tangled in the web of the Project. An eerie atmosphere, slowly revealed truths, believably damaged main characters and perspectives on the cult and its leader from both inside and outside make this a compelling read. *I got this book for the publisher for my honest thoughts* I really did like this book. I thought diving into a cult and seeing how the effect the many people involved was a super compelling topic for a read. I really liked both characters point of view that we experience and saw in this read. I also really liked at the heart of this book was the realtionship between the sisters at the heart of it. I struggled a tad with the mystery at the heart of it. I also felt like other then the "years" dictating the chapters we were in, the two characters POV read so similar it was hard to make differences between them. I really did like Lo path in this novel but overall, it was not favorite read of the year. I liked that it dealt with the harder topics like cult life. *I got this book for the publisher for my honest thoughts* I really did like this book. What a heartwarming line to end this journey of a book on. When I finally read the last line of the book, I was in awe on how far our characters have come and how the 2 sisters will finally see each other again, what a blissful moment. This book is kinda similar to Final Fantasy VII in a way with its mostly city environment where one mega corporation that controls most of the populus, the Unity Project. They claim to be nothing more than a help to this city of no name, the way it is left without a name contributes to the overall mystery of the world you are exploring while reading, it’s done really well. It is a ambitious environment for our main protagonists to explore, sisters Bea and Lo to delve into. The story is told in both past and present tenses since the story like to switch between flashbacks and what is happening at the moment. The flashbacks often add depth to the characters as they progress throughout the story, like the cold opener of the book, the introduction. The introduction is pretty deep since we are just thrown into a scenario we have no clue about without much information on our two protagonist sisters, other than how they are separated, a deadly car accident that let Bea get captured. The main theme throughout your reading is most often mystery. A lot of things are left ambiguous and to your imagination so you can think about the characters a bit deeper than some action books. The looming Unity Project and it’s leader, antagonist Lev Warren are just too mysterious to be trusted by many people including our protagonists. They do well as the antagonists, as they again, are left very mysterious to the plot of the story. The Project is a book that may not be for everyone, as it has a kinda slow start and it takes a bit to get to the big moments, but pressing on and getting through is definitely worth the wait. It may be a hard read for some, but it is without a doubt a good read. PrêmiosNotable Lists
