The story was intriguing but you do need to suspend reality, in my opinion. The book is fiction so I usually let go of reality, making this an enjoyable listen. At just over 2 hours, it’s perfect if you want something you can listen to in one sitting. It does start a bit slow but quickly changes into suspenseful story you can’t stop listening to. The ending was well done. The narrator, Kate Mara, was okay. It took me a minute to get into the way she read this. I think she was trying to provide atmosphere. Basic Thriller Review of the Audible Original audiobook (April 30, 2020) The Getaway was my first reading of the [author:Greer Hendricks|16935182] and [author:Sarah Pekkanen|2982045] team who are the co-authors of several suspense hits such as [book:The Wife Between Us|34189556] and [book:An Anonymous Girl|39863515]. It is ironical that Hendricks the editor gets top billing over Pekkanen the writer due to alphabetical listing. The Getaway was fairly standard fare with many implausible setups along the way. The main question being why someone smart enough to be a Washington D.C. campaign manager could be duped into the entrapment she was. The villain is crafted as charming and appealing when such is needed but wildly psychotic when the twist is required. The suspense was built very well though and the final actual Getaway was well handled. Still, this was fairly basic stuff. The Getaway is one of ten Audible Originals made freely available to members for the month of May 2020. It is available to everyone for a standard price. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

I picked up 'The Getaway' because it was free from Audible and because I'd heard good things about "The Wife Between Us" from these two writers and thought I could use this novella to sample their work.
When I was a third of the way in to the novella, I was unimpressed but still ready to listen. the storytelling was competent, the tone was creepy and laced with latent threat but I was struggling to believe in or care about the main character.
She was too conveniently tragic. She was also incredibly trusting. She was supposed to bright (straight-A-student, political activist) but she proved remarkably open to psychobabble of the be-the-best-teapot-you-can-be kind and saw a charismatic man where I saw a predatory charmer.
By the end of the first chapter, a second woman was in danger and asks our heroine for help. Her first instinctive response? To assume the second woman is lying to want to run to the predatory male to discuss what could have happened to this woman to make her exhibit this behaviour.
At that point, I was done. I didn't care what happened to this woman and my disbelief could no longer be suspended.
Maybe I'm being too harsh. Maybe I should be treating this a sort of literary fairground ride, something I'm supposed to enjoy even though I know the terror is manufactured?
Maybe.
Except, I hate fairground rides.
