I'd have rated it 4 but there are some in here which are absolutely piss poor, although I didn't mind much because her style makes them easy reading at least. Christie has a great style and they're very easy to read and just keep reading. The attempted horror stories are worse but still not awful - I enjoyed them at least - although the stars of the show are the Miss Marple ones. Other ones are much more forgettable. The short format has the advantage of the mystery and characters not wearing out their welcome although it loses out on the satisfaction and suspense aspect. Some of them are a bit weak and as I said earlier a few are awful but the good ones are great fun. Not a stunning literary collection and doesn't really outshine the main books but if you enjoy Christie's stuff you'll definitely enjoy this. ( ) As other reviewers have pointed out, this collection is not just Miss Marple stories. I'm fine with that, except that Miss Marple doesn't enter the collection at all until about halfway in... The book should really just be titled something like Agatha Christie Short Stories, because using Marple's name in the title when she's only present in less than half the stories, in the later half of the book, is rather deceptive. The stories are good, of course -- they're Christie, and it's interesting to read them in chronological order, seeing the progression of her ideas and writing. This collection consists of 55 short stories by Agatha Christie – it should be noted that less than half feature Miss Marple despite the title of the compilation, and also that all stories have also been published elsewhere. However, it’s great to have so many of Christie’s short stories gathered together in one volume. (There is also a collection of all the Poirot short stories – 51 in all – and a further one of more than 50 short stories featuring other detectives who Christie wrote about, such as Tommy and Tuppence, Harley Quin, and more.) Essentially if you have read and enjoyed any Agatha Christie books or watched any film or stage adaptations and liked them, then you will probably enjoy reading this collection. I personally dipped in and out of it in between reading other novels, but you could just read it straight through. As with all short story collections, some are better than others, and it comes down to people’s opinions. My favourite were probably Witness for the Prosecution, and Greenshaw’s Folly, despite the fact that the latter was a Miss Marple story and I am not overly keen on Marple (LOVE Poirot though!) There weren’t any that I really disliked, so overall I would call this book a successful read! sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
A brand new omnibus of 55 short stories, presented for the first time in chronological order. Described by her friend Dolly Bantry as ' the typical old maid of fiction', Miss Marple has lived almost her entire life in the sleepy hamlet of St Mary Mead. Yet, by observing village life she has gained an unparalleled insight into human nature - and used it to devasting effect. As her friend Sir Henry Clithering, the ex-Commissioner of Scotland Yard has been heard to say: 'She's just the finest detective God ever made.' - and many Agatha Christie fans would agree. Appearing for the first time in The Murder at The Vicarage (1930) her crime-fighting career spanned over forty years when she solved her final case in 1977 in Sleeping Murder. With every tale flawlessly plotted by the Queen of Crime herself, these short stories provide a feast for hardened Agatha Christie addicts as well as those who have grown to love the detective through her many film and television appearances. Here, for the first time, more than 50 of Agatha Christie's mini masterpieces have been collected together in one volume, perfectly illustrating the true breadth of her talent. As well as every story featuring Miss Marple, the book includes additional stand-alone tales, from macabre tales of the supernatural, through suspense-ridden mysteries, to heart-stopping cases of murder.
