Jason is an American teenager who is obsessed with Hong Kong cinema and kung-fu classics. He makes an extraordinary discovery in a Chinatown pawnshop: the legendary stick weapon of the Chinese sage and warrior, the Monkey King. With the lost relic in hand, Jason unexpectedly finds himself traveling back to ancient China. He meets the drunken kungfu master, Lu Yan; an enigmatic and skillful Silent Monk; and the vengeance-bent Golden Sparrow. Jason is lead on a quest to return the staff to its rightful owner, the Monkey King, who has been imprisoned in stone by the evil Jade Warlord for five hundred years. While rummaging around for some bootleg kung-fu DVDs in a pawn shop in Boston's Chinatown, Jason discovers an ancient golden staff. When he examines the staff closely, he finds himself magically transported back to ancient China where he is quested to free the fabled warrior, the Monkey King, with the help of a kung fu master and a misfit warrior. If he doesn't succeed, he may be trapped deep in the past forever.
The tale of the Monkey King told with martial arts flair. Two of my favorite performers working together for the first time make for a perfect movie. The visuals and story-telling are a great escape. ( )
