"It's been 25 years since Gus and Monica left England to start a new life in Spain, building a vineyard and wine business from the ground up. However, when Gus suffers a stroke and their idyllic Mediterranean life is thrown into upheaval, it's left to their three grown-up children in London to step in . . . Sebastian is busy running his company with his wife, Anna, who's never quite seen eye-to-eye with her mother-in-law. Katie, a successful solicitor in the city, is distracted by the problems with her long-term partner, Nic, and the secretive lives of their three daughters. And Jake, ever the easy-going optimist, is determined to convince his new wife, Bella, that moving to Spain with their 18-month-old would be a good idea. As the children descend on the vineyard, it becomes clear that each has their own idea of how best to handle their mum and dad, as well as the family business. But as long-simmering resentments rise to the surface and tensions reach breaking point, can the family ties prove strong enough to keep them together?"--Publisher description.… (mais)

Joanna Trollope is ten years older than me, so she's been writing for about eighty percent of my reading life. This is the first of her books I've read, and I now I'm chastising myself for waiting this long.

Mum & Dad is a story of a fractured family, whose dysfunction is unravelled when Dad suffers a stroke in Spain, where he (and Mum) have lived for twenty-five years. Their three children, and their own children (ranging from toddlers to moody teenagers) have to disrupt their London lives to help.

Trollope writes thoughtfully, articulately, with emotion and compassion. Her characters are realistically imperfect: they're human and relatable. Their life stresses and pressures, their worries, their hopes are all recognisable.

Despite the slightly underwhelming ending, I found the story and the characters engaging and interesting, and as an introduction to this well-known author, it has propelled me into Trollope world! Many, many more to be read, very definitely! ( )

When Englishman with vineyard in Spain has a stroke his adult children rally around. But long supressed family tensions rise to the surface. Can peace and function be restored or even improved?

Another good 'family relationships' novel by Joanna Trollope. I am impressed by how she illustrates each family's dysfunctions and resets the generational, power, and gender dynamics to create a more cohesive functional family.

Its like working on a chaotic jumble of a jigsaw puzzle; moving the pieces around until they fit as well as possible.

Like mysteries I read, I tried guessing how it would all play out but I was totally wrong. Good to be happily surprised.

A quick and pleasant read.

An enjoyable character-based novel, revolving around an older couple who have lived in Spain for thirty years, and their adult offspring, who live with their own families in the UK.

Realistic, three-dimensional people interact in a variety of ways, and there's plenty to think about connected to family responsibilities and the impossibility of getting everything right. Different styles of marriage and parenthood are explored lightly, and the whole is a satisfying and quite uplifting story.

I went back to Joanne Trollope after my interest in her faded away, and my lack of interest seems to have been justified. This novel displays some strength, but mostly weakness, in her characterizations. Mum and Dad are Gus and Monica, grandparents who left Britain to start a vineyard in Spain, leaving behind three grown children and granchildren. When cantankerous Gus has a stroke, everything falls apart and the weak underlying relationships between siblings and parents, and parents and children, are all revealed. The shallow efforts to include the house servants and vineyard workers add nothing to the plot and they just seem to be around to take care of the couple, with no lives of their own - I would have cut them out. Sudden, unpredictable changes occur out of nowhere and although the ending is tied up in a perfect bow, that's not enough for 321 pages. ( )
