This is the epitome of cute. The artwork is lush and vibrant and really draws the reader in. I rank the artwork as 5 stars and the story as 3 stars. The illustrator really captured the tone and liveliness of each character and scene with immense detail and beautiful colors. The illustrator understood the assignment! For a superhero called Primer that receives powers through paint, the color choices are essential to the development of the story. This story does a great job of trying to tackle complex issues such as fostering, the definition of family, and gender non-conforming professions but it doesn't go much further than slightly below the surface. I do appreciate that it wasn't stereotypical. I would pick up a sequel and hope that the characters can become more fully fleshed out. ( )

This is a fun, modern superhero and I am excited to see more of Primer's story in other books and adventures. I like the foster family she finds and the way the paints replenish themselves and I adore her superhero arc. She starts by wishing a superhero would come to save her and ends as the superhero who saved herself, who also happens to have an awesome support system of friends and family. The colors are bright and visually appealing. I highly recommend this book. ( )

Ashley is a feisty young teen and spray can paint artist.

She lived with her abusive father who is now imprisoned, so now tough little Ashley has bounces from foster home to foster home. When she finally finds a new family she thinks she might tolerate, she allows herself to become cautiously optimistic.

Kitch Nolan is a visual artist while his wife, Yuka, is a geneticist for Zecromax Labs. They’re childless and overjoyed to welcome Ashley into their life, but Yuka grows increasingly distant for an unknown reason, reader will soon discover. Soon Ashley discovers that Yuka is keeping a secret: She’s stolen some prototype Project Warpaint, a new secret weapon coveted by the military.

The story gets really far fetched here, but it’s still fun to watch the power unfold. The key is body paint imbued with superhero powers, one per color. And there are 33 colors so 33 different super powers. When Ashley accidentally activates the paints and begins experimenting with them, she decides to assume her own superhero identity. As she becomes the hero, she also becomes Primer with the help of her new friend Luke.

Soon she realizes she’s up against a bigger threat than your average bad guy. A supersoldier is hunting down this new secret weapon and is more than happy to sacrifice Ashley in the process.

This is a fun, and very colorful book. Ashley is a cutie with oversized eyes and a petite waist.

I like the diversity as foster family the Nolans are an interracial couple, and Luke presents black.

Definitely a series here due to the abrupt ending to the adventure, ( )

Oh, friends. The story in this book is just too good for words. Ashley’s origin story is one that I feel a lot of people out there can resonate with in some aspect. She’s been from foster family to another, carrying the baggage of her childhood and unwilling to let down the walls that she has built to protect her. I instantly recognized her use of humor to protect her feelings, and you can’t even imagine the size of my smile when she met the Nolans. The love toward amazing foster parents is real here, and it is guaranteed to make you giggle, sigh, and maybe even tear up a little.

Ashley herself is a very relatable character. She’s funny, impulsive, and full of kindness. Despite everything that she has been through, she isn’t callous or trying to hurt others. I loved the panels that showed her first day of school, because it took that one small page to showcase what a wonderful person she was. Standing up for ourselves is one thing, but standing up for others is always even better. When she finds a way to become a superhero? Well, that only seals the deal.

I could gush on and on about the diversity in the characters, the beautiful flow between the panels and the dialogue, and even the interesting questions that are posed by this gorgeous story. Still, I don’t want to ruin anything for potential readers so I’ll stop here. Suffice it to say that if you’re looking for a fun, middle grade and YA appropriate graphic novel this is it! Primer is ready to steal your heart. ( )
