Amazing writing, amazing narration. Cinnamon bun hero and heroine, despite her best efforts, ha. ( )

This series is fabulous. I love that Dani Brown is bisexual and that's just a blip. It's just part of who she is: smart, amazing hair, great laugh, and bisexual. Really there isn't anything I don't adore about these books. Fantastic contemporary romance, with complicated human beings with complex emotions. Love, love, love. ( )

I LOVED LITERALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK. And yes, I'm shouting for a reason. I smiled so hard throughout this book. Zaf is the ultimate book boyfriend and this is in my top two books of the year so far. Love love love. ( )

Dani Brown is a driven academic who, after her first serious relationship ended badly, decided she was "bad at relationships" and has sworn off romance (though not sex). When sturdy, handsome, ex-rugby player security guard Zafir rescues Danika from an elevator during a fire drill, everyone assumes they're dating, which boosts Zafir's side business, a nonprofit that helps young rugby players get in touch with their feelings and avoid toxic masculinity. He tentatively proposes they fake-date, and she agrees, even going on a radio interview with him. But the two have serious chemistry, and end up having sex as well - an arrangement they agree can last as long as their fake relationship. But what if neither of them wants it to end? An excellent supporting cast (Zafir's mum, sister-in-law, niece, and friend Jamal; Dani's two sisters and best friend, Sorcha) rounds out this novel which, of course, has a HEA, after Dani gets out of her own way.

"When you've moved on past something, you don't focus on it in the rearview mirror. I'm good now. I don't need to go back there." (Zafir to Jamal, ch. 4)

F--- overthinking, f--- playing it safe, f--- saying no when the yes on the tip of his tongue had never tasted so good. (ch. 7)

Was it possible to move on too hard? (Zaf, ch. 10)

Hurting a loved on was like running over someone's foot; you rarely meant to do it, but the bones still broke. (ch. 19)

People shouldn't be changed - but perhaps they should grow. (ch. 19)

"You make me feel like myself, and you make me feel like I'm enough, and you even make me feel like I would be just fine without you. The thing is, I don't want to be without you..." (Dani to Zaf, epilogue) ( )

i really, really liked this. it wasn't overly predictable (i mean, in specifics; it still follows the trope, of course) until toward the end, when it all got to be a little too much for me. but until then it was really great. dani is openly bisexual and was most recently with a woman (i may have liked this even more if she'd ended up with josephine). she has her issues to work through, but i really loved zafir and his issues (so maybe i wouldn't have forgiven her leaving him if she'd ended up with josephine). he was dealing with anxiety and used sports to work through mental health issues, as well as working through toxic masculinity. i *loved* that aspect of this, as well as dani's feminist and anti-racist work. it's super refreshing to see these kinds of characters - imperfect (but not because of whatever baggage they bring in), not white, not skinny. and i really like the tone that hibbert writes in, at least in this series.

"With his oversize raggedy jumper and enormous eyes he looked like the ghost of a Victorian child shoved into skinny jeans."

i loved that hibbert included this: "'I know you put a lot of stock in the fact that you're better now, that you handle things, that you cope. But coping takes a lot out of a person, too. And handling things doesn't mean never struggling or slipping up.'"

i also really loved the reason that zafir gave for reading romance books. it's something i only started doing recently, and i think his reason largely mirrors mine if i care to delve into it one day: "'...book after book about people facing their issues head on, and handling it, and never, ever failing. At least not for good. ... My story didn't need to be over if I didn't want it to. Like if I could just be strong enough to reclaim my emotions and to work through them, maybe I'd be okay again.
