I love the idea behind this book, however I'm not sure if the book meets all its desired objectives. The learning poem prior to each educational segment (definitions of racism, stereotypes, etc) relies too heavily on having rhyming couplets rather than sharing a concise message about the terminology. Also, the poem and suggested activities quickly limit the age appropriateness of the book to children aged seven and under. I was hoping to use the resource with my youth group, but it doesn't fit my age demographics. As the book evolves it might be nice if the author were able to include a 'companion reader' for educators. The companion guide could help educators begin and direct the discussion points suggested in the book ""There's only 1 RACE-the HUMAN one," says me! A Children's Book: ENDING RACISM!". ( ) This is a very simple, cute way to teach children about the surface of racism and fitting in. It doesn't delve too deeply for it's intended age group and offers some seemingly insignificant actions that have a big impact. This book, and those like it, should be standards in all schools worldwide. They are especially crucial in today's social climate because children are not born hating other children. Required reading in schools ensures books like this get to the kids who need to read them the most. I love reading the poems...every time I read it--they provide a different meaning! The photos of the children are so engaging...I continue to have hope for them that THEY do not fall into the TRAP of US and THEM. Truly, we can not have RACISM in as much as we consider ourselves of the same RACE. This book is a labor of love that reaches the void of the inner workings of human outreach. How can you not appreciate all children for the gift to the world that they truly are? If you bring them into this world certainly share with them their value and the uniqueness of ALL of the children. If only all people could read just one excerpt...ENDING RACISM would be 4 REAL. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
In the introductory pages of "There's only 1 RACE-the HUMAN one," says me!-A Children's Book: ENDING RACISM!, two statements reveals its purpose: "Teaching children about Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Identity via scenarios and pictures of today's youth allows us a creative opportunity to root out & TO END a most ignorant & destructive 'ISM,' RACISM" so that "One day may we all (of every hue, shade, and tone) come to know the beauty of us-the human rainbow!" Readers of this uniquely interactive book follow young people (of various skin "hues" and "shades," as well as those who speak with a variety of accents) through several different relatable scenarios in school where they are confronted with problems relating to having a low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence which comes from their (and other's) perceived of "ethnicity," cultural make-up or "heritage." These scenes with its dialog show the transformation of young people as active participants-changing their beliefs and ideas (from negative to positive) in order to make friends. They are shown actively engaging in behaviors that belie the "stereotypes"-the perceived of negative differences as sometimes envisioned through one's "ethnic" and overall cultural "identity." Provided at the end of the text, a glossary of carefully chosen and simply and accurately defined terminology (shown within this text by "quotations") empowers every reader to speak knowledgeably of race and racism-issues that continue to create divisions amongst us today. Duly transformed, children may begin their journey forward, not only being aware and appreciative of diversity but, to being true non-racists-those who are allied and supportive of all of us who share the same race (the HUMAN one)! At the very least, younger and older generations are now prepared to begin the very necessary conversation about themselves and their experiences in matters of 'race and ethnicity'-made less scary by way of this rhythmic, picturesque and engaging book.
