A girl describes all the types of brown that make her who she is.
This book is a great example for building self-esteem and self-love.

This book is good for an intermediate age group, or to be used to study poetry for an older age group, or read aloud for a younger age group. It describes the shades of brown that make up all the wonderful things in the narrator's life and connect to her family and identity. It's absolutely gorgeous and I would most definitely have it in my classroom, regardless of age, as a brilliant example of poetry and finding all the things to love about your background, and would likely use it to demonstrate free verse poetry and different kinds of figurative language, alliteration, and more.

I really enjoyed this book! From the lovely, warm illustrations to the poetry of the words. Look & be taken in by the whimsy & comfort of each image & each word!
This is a celebration of the self, what joy this young person finds in their own skin! Read & celebrate! ( )

"Aseries of young brown girls admire the many different browns in their environments and in their own images in this poetic celebration of self and nature.

“Deep secret brown. / Like the subtly churning river currents / playfully beckoning me / through my grandmother’s kitchen window….” A girl gazes, smiling, out the window at a scene of the natural world. On the next spread, a close-up of a bespectacled girl’s face is accompanied by the line, “Deep secret brown…like my eyes.” Another girl admires the “feathery brown” of tree shadows on a hike with her daddy and then the “feathery brown” of her eyelashes. Still another tastes the “amber brown” of honey from her aunt’s hive and admires the “amber brown” of her own hair. Each girl is featured with family members or friends, relating to nature, and on her own having fun or in a reflective moment. The text of the poem is delightfully filled with rich imagery and luscious language, complex enough to grow into but familiar enough to enjoy at any age. Juanita’s earth-toned illustrations are joyful and remarkably inclusive. The girls and their friends and family wear a variety of hairstyles; there are characters in hijabs, one with vitiligo, a child in a wheelchair, and an adult without a hand. Readers may find themselves wondering whether this is the same girl in many aspects or many—and then contemplating their own multifaceted natures.

This “celebration” makes magic out of the everyday joys of being in the world. (Picture book. 6-12)" A Kirkus Starred Review, www.kirkusreviews.com

In this short, yet beautifully illustrated, book that celebrates black beauty we see a collection of young children and their families enjoying themselves and their appearances. The poem was written about celebrating black hair and features because in modern society it isn't celebrated enough. This is a story, that although is simple and easy for all to read, should be in each classroom. The poem alone is inspirational and allows for students to feel represented and appreciated in the classroom. This book only speaks of joy and self-love so therefore this is a perfect addition to any class.
