Towards the end of the 18th century, naturalist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt and mathematician and physicist, Carl Friedrich Gauss, set out to measure the world. This novel brings the two eccentric geniuses to life.
thorold: Kehlmann's ironic fictional view casts a rather different light on Humboldt from Wulf's, and possibly a slightly unfair one, but both are interesting.
Two self-absorbed men set out on individual scientific quests, one mathematical and one botanical/cartographical. They both accomplish scientific things, are rude and selfish as often as possible, and are always tedious. In fact, they come off as completely flat, unreal characters, a feeling that is heightened by the author's blunt and choppy writing style and the almost complete lack of dialog throughout the book.
The inability of Humboldt and Gauss to understand the people around them - and their complete interest in trying - made me completely uninterested in finding out what happens to them. Book tossed aside in supreme irritation. ( )
En los tiempos en los que Humboldt recorrió nuestro planeta, gran parte de la tierra quedaba todavía por explorar, lo cual, unido a su carácter intrépido y temerario, lo llevó a protagonizar las más descabelladas aventuras: navegar por el Orinoco, explorar selvas vírgenes, probar venenos, escalar volcanes o medirse con monstruos marinos y con caníbales no menos aterradores. Carl Friedrich Gauss, al que se conoció como el "príncipe de las matemáticas", no se queda corto en términos de excentricidad: brillante matemático, Gauss es también un apasionado de las mujeres, un auténtico galán que, eso sí, es capaz de abandonar el lecho conyugar en plena noche nupcial para anotar una fórmula matemática. En luegar de ensalzar e estos personajes históricos, el autor nos los muestra en todas sus facetas: con sus grandezas, pero también con sus errores, sus pequeñas manías y sus debilidades, y consigue de este modo una perspectiva humana inédita de estos dos grandes hombres de la historia.
Intéressant, plein d'humour dans la description des deux grands savants, Gauss le mathématicien casanier et Humboldt, le botaniste explorateur. Mais le parti-pris biographique, et la construction linéaire, rendent le récit un peu plat. ( )

Han er som sine romanfigurer selv en lille smule genial, hvad kritikken i Tyskland for længst har bemærket. Man overgiver sig til denne romans makrokosmiske kortlægning med dens generøse blanding af løsagtighed og præcision. Og er mere end godt underholdt.
En million tyskere kan sagtens tage fejl. Men det gjorde de ikke, da de købte Daniel Kehlmanns drilske geniroman Opmålingen af verden (...) Kehlmann gør det fermt, sjovt og afsindig lærd.

Um das auszugleichen, müsse man Dreiecke gewissermassen nach der Messung zu unendlich kleiner Größe schrumpfen lassen. Grundsätzlich eine einfache Differentialoperation. Allerdings in dieser Form .... (...) In dieser Form , murmelte er, whärend er zu notieren begann, habe das noch keiner durchgeführt. Als er aufsah, war er allein.
Als Humboldt kurz darauf seine Instrumente einpackte, wußte er, daß die Sonne am Tag des Solstitiums von der Chaussee aus gesehen genau über ser Spitze der größten Pyramide auf- und durch die Spitze der zweitgrößten unterging. Diese ganze Stadt war ein Kalender! Wer hatte das erdacht? Wie gut hatten die Menschen die Sterne gekannt, und was hatten sie mitteilen wollen? Seit über tausend Jahren war er der erste, der ihre Botschaft lesen konnte.
