The Weight of a Moment is a beautiful story about the fragility of life and the redemptive power of friendship. Nick Sterling, a Fenwick Prize winning journalist, can't move beyond a tragedy caused by one of his articles. Tom Corbett, a successful antiques dealer, is humiliated and shamed by an internet video that damages his business, marriage, and family. After their blunders, one shameful and one fatal, the two men run from their pasts, meet in a small Pennsylvania town, and, despiteor because ofthe most unusual circumstances, help each other find redemption. Together, they make an unusual discovery that changes everything, one that unwittingly puts them back onto the national stage. Joined by fate, each man's journey is remarkable in its own right and only exceeded by their shared journey. In a profound final scene, Nick confronts his tragic mistake, asks for forgiveness, and the novel's title, The Weight of a Moment, is fully realized. Contrasting elements: big cities and small towns, modern and historic, priceless and valuable, compassion and condemnation, add to the richness of the tale. Critically acclaimed, this second novel from the author of Skyscraper of a Man is a brilliant sophomore effort. --… (mais)

Nearly flawless prose made this story fun to read. The inserts of journalistic readings were interesting and beautifully written. The story evolved as well-paced and kept my interest. I could feel Nick's frustration with Tom's slow and deliberate decision making while also sensing Tom's roller coaster of emotions. This was an interesting story to read. ( )

The moment is all we have and some of them transform life

Well paced with characters we can relate to, this is a story of despair and redemption with a tinge of transformation. An appropriate title, it engages the reader easily while evoking an array of emotions. The lives of the two primary characters parallel one another and as the story plays out they grow closer. During times of duress friendships become valuable and this story demonstrates the importance. The author manages to slip in an unexpected element that at its root, moves the characters closer highlighting the value of levity as things grow heavy. Highly recommend for those who prefer stories of the human condition to those of horror. ( )

"The Weight of a Moment" is a moving tale of two separate men that were impacted negatively by sudden and unexpected turn of events in their lives. Nick Sterling, and award winning newspaper journalist is at the top of his game, with a large following, when he chooses to revisit in his column a tragic crime that had happened a decade earlier in his community. The photo that he chooses to appear with his article shows, along with the crime scene, a new rookie cop, who now, a decade later, is undercover infiltrating dangerous gangs. The photo leads to the cop's death, tragically leaving a young wife and daughters grieving. The guilt that results from Nick's choice plunges him into serious addictions in his effort to self-medicate.

Tom Corbitt is an extremely successful antique and estate appraiser and co-owner in a multi-million dollar business, married to a successful career woman working in the financial sector. After a few troubling revelations regarding his son and daughter, and learning of the affair his wife has been having, he has reached his limit and blows up at some college kids in a coffee shop. Unbeknownst to him, someone tapes the conflict, puts it up on the internet and it goes viral-- causing problems at home and he ends up having to leave his business. He as well plunges into alcohol to try to cope. He learns that he has inherited the family farm from a childless uncle that has passed. Tom goes to the small town where the farm is located to try to escape from his troubles and hide, and learns some shattering family secrets. While at the farm, he meets Nick Sterling, and because they feel as if they have much in common, become fast friends.

While working together to renovate the dilapidated farm, Nick and Tom unknowingly help each other sort out their pasts, and the work is therapeutic. They unearth dinosaur remains, and both become attatched to it-- I think the dinosaur symbolizes all of the secrets they have tried to bury and run from. The book ends nicely and the reader is not left hanging but gets closure. I was moved by the story and thoroughly enjoyed it-- it kept my attention, and got me emotionally invested in the characters, really desiring for them to have a happy outcome.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review-- thank you! ( )
