A wholesome but cliché fantasy about how those living in the margins build their own “chosen family”, with a dash of gay romance. The moral lessons were extremely heavy-handed, even if this is billed more as a YA novel. The book would’ve fared better with more subtlety; the characterizations were so obvious as to be unintentional parodies and there was a literal lecture about how to treat others/self actualisation every other scene. The characters were cute, though. ( )

Linus Baker is a caseworker for DICOMY, a government group that manages magical children. He's done the same job for seventeen years, with precision, never wanting to move up in the ranks or wondering what happened to children after he made his recommendations. But when Extremely Upper Management gives him a top-secret case, going out to a house on an island with six extremely unusual children, and their caretaker, Arthur Parnassus, Linus is forced to re-evaluate everything he thought he knew.

This is a feel-good story that really doesn't leave you in any doubt what it's about and what it's trying to teach readers: just because someone is different doesn't mean you should react in fear or hate. In fact, for all it was about middle-aged men there was something about its pointed lesson that felt much... younger. And that is perhaps why I'm not absolutely adoring it. I enjoyed it, and it made me happy to see the story end up where I knew it was going, but subtle it isn't. The characters, however, are delightful, and I enjoyed all the kids and their antics and seeing Linus's growth. I'll be on the lookout for more from Klune. ( )

One of my 2021 favorites. I loved all the characters, but Sal especially. Shy, wise Sal, who writes so beautifully. ( )

Linus Baker is the quintessential company man: a caseworker with DICOMY (the Department in Charge of Magical Youth), he investigates orphanages to determine if the children are best protected there or if the orphanage should be closed. His obsessive attention to detail and rules and regulations makes him perfect for a highly classified investigation of an unusual orphanage on an island in the sea. Arriving for a month-long stay, he and his cat Calliope meet Zoe, the sprite-spirit of the island; Arthur Parnassus, the master of the orphanage; and the six children: Talia the gnome, Phee the forest sprite, the Wyvern Theodore, shy shapeshifter Sal, the amorphous blob called Chauncey (who wants more than anything to be a bellhop at a hotel) - and then there’s Lucy, who through no fault of his own is the Antichrist. How will Linus investigate this unusual household, and what will his verdict be?.... I can’t begin to state how much I loved, loved, *loved* this book, even though it was quite clear from almost the very beginning that Everything Would Be Okay In The End. Mr. Klune’s writing style is both terse and flat as befits a company man’s report writing, and as poetic and evocative as, well, magic must of necessity be: Sal’s essay will stay with the reader forever, and the scene in the ice cream shop made me cry. This is for any fantasy lover, and for anybody who ever felt or was made to feel “different” just for being who they are; very highly recommended! ( )
