The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampires have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampire Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampire friends.… (mais)

PandorasRequiem: Same flavor *grin* as these books in this series. If you like this series, you will also most likely "Blue Bloods" by Melissa De La Cruz. Private "Vampire Finishing School": narrated by the outcast who has problems fitting into her new surroundings, her new attraction to blood and the Changes in her body. But, she has good friends who stand by her and attracts the eye of a quite fetching young man. Good read, same type of genre. :)… (mais)

The pop culture references got to be a little tiring, but they tapered off about half way into the book. I was uncertain about it at first, but it did get much better as it went along. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series. ( )

I'm surprised that I don't hate it as much as I should.
bj, really? It's unnecessary.
Will I read the sequels? NOPE
I already read The Secret Circle by L.J. Smith and I can say it's better.
The plot is similar. ( )

Well, on behalf of the teenagers of the world, I feel a bit insulted.

But I just can't get myself into a Reveiw Rage. I recognized things in this book that, if I actually gave half a shit about was going on, would've drove me insane. But it didn't, because I didn't care. I read this book expecting it to be shitty, and it was, so I'm not angry. It met my expectations. Now, if I come into a book expecting something kick-ass, and it isn't, then I get anoyed and can review it properly (see my review of Spell Bound, the last book of the Hex Hall trilogy.

Or, if the series has gone downhill, but there are characters I care about, then I can reveiw it (
Last Sacrifice review

Due to the fact that I can't get sufficiently 'feely' about this book, I made a list of people that should have strong feelings about this book:

People Who This Book is Offensive To:

1. Teens: Teens are totally immature (Hey, look at my big word!)and are completley obsessed (My volcab makes me sound sooooo smart...)with appearances (That means that I care about how I look, in case you don't know).

2. People of Oklahoma: According to this book, you all are a bunch of rednecks. Aw hell... (It's strange that Stevie Rae and everyone else has an accent, and Zoey, who has lived in Oklahoma her whole life, doesn't. She also doesn't consider herself an 'Okie'
Example: Stevie Rae - Hey y'all. What's up, y'all? I'm gonna go chuck some corn.
Zoey - Hello. What's up? Do you want to go somewhere with me?)

3. People who have struggled with bulimia or anorexia, or people who know someone who has: Zoey thinks you are freaks.

4. Gay people: Being gay is the only thing worth mentioning about you.

5. Paris Hilton

6.English teachers who shudder at the overusage of parentheses: Hi.(LOL)(*smileyface*)

7. People who have read Dracula: There is next to no vampire-type traits in this book. They don't drink blood, the sun makes them slightly woozy, and they practice Wicca.

8. Girls who are comfortable with themselves and have high self-esteem:
You are all sluts in Zoey's book.

9. Fans of Vampire Academy: They vampire boarding school thing is much better there.

10. People whose eyes tend to burn when they read the word vampYre: Self-explanatory.

And lastly,

11. People who take books with Mary-Sues, no plot and horrible writing very seriously and feel that reading things like that lowers their intelligence: It probably does.

And also,

People who should be embarassed because of this book:

1. P.C. and Kristin Cast: One question: WHY?

2. People of Oklahoma Involved in Literature: Why did you give this book so many awards?

3. People of America Involved with Literature: *See above*

I almost do not want to review this book after reading so many reviews stating it was the worst book these people have ever read. Yikes! Of course, a lot of the reviews were really funny and the complaints are duly noted.

I read this three years ago after I lost my job. I thought it was so much better than Twilight. I'm not a teenager; I have a little different perspective on this. I thought it was entertaining. I started the next book in the series but it wasn't intriguing enough for me to finish.

So I'd have to say Average as far as my opinion of this vampire novel. I've definitely read worse. Much, much worse. ( )

I'm not a big fan of vampire books, but one of my friends really loves this series so I decided to give it a shot. The plot of the story was really intriguing the further I read and I definitely want to continue on to know what happens in the end.

However, I only gave it 3 stars because it could have been better in a few different ways.

1. It has way too much of a teeny bopper lingo. I enjoy young adult books, but this was seemed too geared towards the younger generation. In a way that I actually got annoyed with some of the words and phrases used.

2. I also dont like when books make the main character super special in comparison to everyone else. A little bit is fine, but I feel like it was just too much in this particular story. ( )

From Hesiod's poem to Nyx, the Greek personification of night:

"There also stands the gloomy house of Night;
ghastly clouds shroud it in darkness.
Before it Atlas stands erect and on his head
and unwearying arms firmly supports the broad sky,
where Night and Day cross a bronze threshold
and then come close and greet each other."
