I cannot say enough about this exquisitely-written book about love and hate and betrayal and murder on the bayou. Claude Ledet, middle-aged and not expecting all that much more out of life than he already has. He has a middle-aged lover, but the night when he meets the mysterious Alexandra in the French Quarter of New Orleans, everything else goes on hiatus. Fantastic book!!! sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
Claude is a middle-aged man unwillingly attached to Mona, a woman obsessed with marriage and respectability. Then one night he meets the exotic Alexandra - regal, tall and spare, skittish and powerfully independent. When her rich friend Diana falls pregnant, Alexandra and Claude agree to accompany her to Diana's house hidden deep in the bayou, where they will assist her with the birth. They are joined by Collie, the housekeeper and Banjo, a drunken old handyman. At the house, Claude hears a disturbing and haunting story of a man similar to himself who was also involved with Alexandra and Diana and was found murdered in a hotel room. This is a gothic and mysterious tale set deep in the heart of the bayou. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

Whilst the plot of this novel is verging on chic-lit territory in places, Valerie Martin is a good writer - she knows how to spin a good yarn, and I zipped through this in a couple of sittings as she had me hooked early on. The ending was a bit anticlimactic, but otherwise an enjoyable (but probably fairly forgettable) read.
4 stars - good summer holiday reading fodder. ( )
