That creates a problem for me. There is a subtle sense early in this book, the supposed first novel, that there is a deeper backstory that has already been published. The characters are too glib and comfortable. Then they go to another planet... I mostly like my magic on Earth, with maybe side trips to Faire or Tir Na Nog. When a character goes through a strange portal and instantly knows they are on another ‘planet’, you’ve first violated the rules as to what an individual knows and second stopped being Urban Fantasy. (I know, ‘sufficiently advanced blah blah’; that’s not urban fantasy, that’s a different beast) I bought this expecting new and different series. It’s not. It’s not unique. Lots of shallow clichées, shallow characters. Lots of unnecessary POVs.
This book is overflowing with unnecessary stuff that doesn't add anything to the story which makes the story feel very unfocused despite its generally fast pacing. (
