Peggy Parish's 'Amelia Bedelia' will live forever, however, I always preferred the adventures of Liza, Bill and Jed Roberts.

'Key to the Treasure' starts off the six-book series of early chapter books. The stories are fairly simplistic and need the charming illustrations to make them work. I may be wrong, as I'm still sourcing the later books for my re-read, but 'Key' is the strongest because of the puzzles built into the story.

Let me explain: the story begins with the twins Liza and Bill and their less-than-a-year-older brother Jed running like mad enjoying the beginning of their summer vacation at their grandparent's house. Their grandparent's live so far away they only see them in the summer, but then again, they get to spend the entire summer roaming the farm! It's idyllic and wholesome and even with the limited characterization of the characters it doesn't take long to get into the story. On a stormy night the children beg their grandfather to tell again the story of a mysterious picture over the fireplace. It's not "really a picture at all", but a collection of sketches. An indian war bonnet, a covered jar, a key and a question mark. It is the legacy of a game that Grampa's grandfather had left behind for his children before leaving home to fight in the American Civil War, never to return. The first clue was lost and the promised "treasure" lost forever with it despite multiple generations of Roberts tearing the house apart to look for it. At play, the children stumble upon a clue. Can they solve the mystery and get the key to the treasure?

The book was published in the late 1960s, but feels even older because of the rustic wholesomeness of the children's summer with their grandparents. At the center of the story are the Native American artifacts the family inherited in the ~1840s from an elderly Indian woman living on the family homestead. The portrayal is positive, the Roberts' had "allowed" the woman to live on "their" land and the woman had grown fond of the family and had given her belongings to the family with her own hands. The fault in the story is that perception that the Indians have vanished entirely. This comes up again in 'Clues in the Woods'. The story otherwise ages well and the puzzles are ingenious. The book's illustrations allow readers to play along, and unlike many children and adult mysteries, the clues and game are reachable by the audience. Even in the way Liza, Bill, and Jed guess at the clues and work out solutions invites readers to play along. I loved that as a child and I love it still. I wish the other books could have kept that aspect of the story, but I suppose there can only be one century-old puzzle game per family.

The books are out of print at the moment, but readily available. I found a nice hardcover edition in a used shop for pocket change (no dust jacket, naturally) and expect to get the rest at library book sales this summer.

I would like to make one complaint. I absolutely hate Bill. He complains, doesn't do his share of the work, and has no patience. He's also a pushy, toxic jerk who's first response to an obstacle is to smash it or, at the very least, vent his frustration at his sister Liza and mock her feelings and call her names. Liza, please grow a backbone. Unfortunately, this is 1966 by way of 'Pleasantville' so she has to be the peacemaker.

15. [Key to the Treasure] by [[Peggy Parish]] (Charlie's bedtime read, 154 pages) - 10/10 = A+
Three siblings spending the summer with their grandparents decide to try to solve the family mystery that their grandpa has been telling them about every summer since they can remember: his great-grandfather hid treasures for his father and siblings, handed down from an old Native American woman who used to live in a cabin nearby: a scary old mask, a deerskin doll and a warrior's shield. The great-grandfather left to fight in the civil war, never returned, and the treasure remained undiscovered.
The only clue they have is a painting hanging over the mantle, which depicts a headdress, a clay pot, a key and a question mark.
This was one of my absolute favorite books when I was a kid; I read it over and over and over again. I was so excited to read it to Charlie, and found that I still love it as an adult. ( )
