This did not hold up as well as its two predecessors. It lacked a full story arc, but had instead about 3 smaller, related arcs. And the end felt simultaneously rushed and dragged out. Reynolds says he intends this to be the last of the books about the Ness sisters. Wise choice, IMO. ( )

This trilogy is twaddle.   I gave it a good a go but gave up on book two, didn't get around to reading this.

Hopefully Permafrost will have Alastair back to grown up books and may he never attempt young adult stuff ever again, he really isn't very good at it.

Bye for now. ( )

Probably a 3.75 really. A good well-written yarn. A little juvenile, but good fun. Slightly twee ending, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and series. ( )

The Ness sisters chased by a squadron and involved in a revolution
The third and final book in the Revenger series
The sisters are completely in command of the Revenger, but chased by a squadron of ships funded by banks and rich families who had suffered in the rearrangement of the quoins. The sisters separated, Adrana making it to Trevannzza Reach, and delivering the clacker to a literally underground revolutionary movement. Adrafura fights a furious battle with the squadron, losing, but when the squadron commander boards the Revenger, Strambli, now completely turned into a Ghostie alien, destroys the boarding party, and Adrafura captures the commander. The Reach turns out to have an engine, that the clacker somehow gets started, and as the revolution starts, the underground movement takes over, moves the world a bit to demonstrate independence. The Reach continues to move, ending up at the whale ship, and all of the mysteries of the quoins, The Reach, and the multiple occupations of the Sundered worlds are resolved. ( )

This is part III of the Revenger trilogy, and my twentieth Alastair Reynolds novel. This series is geared more toward a YA audience and does not measure up to most of Reynolds’s previous “hard” science fiction work.

As in the first two books of the series, the story essentially follows two young girls who took to space in an attempt to rescue their dad from poverty. After taking command of a spaceship and its ragtag crew, the sisters find themselves the target of what passes for the “establishment” power of what remains of the Sol system.

Several “mysteries” are “solved” by the two young women, as they seek to reform the corrupt socio-economic system in place at the time. There is no heavy lifting here, as the author’s economic explanations and proposals are laughably naïve, even in a YA setting.

Having read the entire series, I cant say that I can recommend it, unless you have read everything else written by Reynolds and Peter Hamilton (and others too numerous to name) and are desperate for something to read. ( )
