The #1 NYT bestselling authors Preston & Child bring the true story of the ill-fated Donner Party to new life in this thrilling novel of archaeology, history, murder, and suspense. Nora Kelly, a young curator at the Santa Fe Institute of Archaeology, is approached by historian Clive Benton with a once-in-a-lifetime proposal: to lead a team in search of the so-called "Lost Camp" of the tragic Donner Party. This was a group of pioneers who earned a terrible place in American history when they became snow-bound in the California mountains in 1847, their fate unknown until the first skeletonized survivors stumbled out of the wilderness, raving about starvation, murder-and cannibalism. Benton tells Kelly he has stumbled upon an amazing find: the long-sought diary of one of the victims, which has an enigmatic description of the Lost Camp. Nora agrees to lead an expedition to locate and excavate it-to reveal its long-buried secrets. Once in the mountains, however, they learn that discovering the camp is only the first step in a mounting journey of fear. For as they uncover old bones, they expose the real truth of what happened, one that is far more shocking and bizarre than mere cannibalism. And when those ancient horrors lead to present-day violence on a grand scale, rookie FBI agent Corrie Swanson is assigned the case...only to find that her first investigation might very well be her last.… (mais)

The start of a new series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, starring Nora Kelly, the archaeologist who assisted Agent Pendergast in five novels. Nora is asked by historian Clive Benton to help search for a lost camp of the tragic Donner Party (a true story of murder, starvation, cannibalism, survival, and hidden treasure). Nora's boss and the Institute are interested in part because of sharing in the potential recovery of a fortune in gold coins. Meanwhile, Corrie Swanson, now a junior FBI agent sponsored by Pendergast is investigating a murder/grave robbery on federal land, which she cleverly ties to several other desecrations/disappearances with the same last name. The stories become intertwined. For me, this lacked a compelling element, except for the last minute appearance of Pendergast, helping the two newbies discover the reason their dig and investigation were related. ( )

After reading "Thunderhead" (Nora Kelly #0), I liked the character and the writing enough to revisit her in this book. I wasn't disappointed and, in fact, this book was better than the first one I read. Kelly is both likable and at times obstinate, stubborn, and condescending - all of which makes her a very complete and complex character. In addition, Preston and Child introduce FBI agent Corrie Swanson, a rookie who is seeking to prove herself and to establish her own authority. Kelly and Swanson clash over what Swanson considers the fulfillment of her duties and what Kelly considers overreach by the rookie FBi agent. Their personalities clash as well and when Swanson closes down the excavation site of the "Lost Camp" of the Donner Party - what has been a highly successful dig and a real feather in Kelly's cap - the tensions become palpable. Grave robbers, dig site looters, missing treasure, and murder make for a page turner and the real plot twist comes when Swanson and Kelly have to join forces and protect each other from a group of murderers who will stop at nothing. A great read!! ( )

Pretty pedestrian book for Preston/Child. I don't think either main character (Nora Kelly or Corrie Swanson) stand out.

The plot revolves around the Donner tragedy and the belief that $20 million in gold is buried near where the family died. An excavation of The Lost Camp is funded by the institute in which Nora works and death ensues.

It's not a bad story, just not up to our authors' higher standard. ( )

Have read and enjoyed all the Pendergast series, most of Lincoln/Child's standalone, and like archeology, but did not like this book, the two main characters, or most of the other characters. Pretty boring ... ( )
