Dr Goldman helps the reader with extracts of Joyce's works, with comments on style and his richness of language which helps untangle what the man was all about. I love Joyce but having little academic background of Irish language and the deeper elements of its culture I often skim over parts I don't fully understand or appreciate the significance of and feel I've often missed the point. Finnegans Wake appeals to me so much, and this book has helped me get a clearer picture of the book.

There are no pictures within, and I would have liked just a couple of shots of joyce outside his home or at work writing, just to help me visualise the man. ( )
