Stacey and Mary Anne are baby-sitting for the Pike family for two weeks at the New Jersey shore. Things are great in Sea City: There's a gorgeous house right on the beach, a boardwalk, plenty of sun and sand... and the cutest boy Stacey has ever seen! Mary Anne thinks that Stacey should leave Scott alone and focus on the Pike kids, but Stacey's in love. Looking for reasons to hang around his lifeguard stand takes up all of her time, which means Mary Anne has to do the job of two baby-sitters. Mary Anne doesn't like it one bit! How can she tell Stacey that Scott just isn't interested without ruining their friendship and breaking Stacey's heart?… (mais)

Over a few days, I read all seven of the available Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels. As a huge fan of the novels when I was a kid, I was nervous to see these adaptations. Would they retain the same charm?

The nostalgia was strong. It was such a delight to revisit Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Mallory. Jessi isn't back yet, and I hope she makes an appearance with the next installment.

I loved reading about some of the old client families and the drama that went along with them.

The illustrations captured the characters, and while the GN series has two illustrators and different styles, I think as a series it feels cohesive.

To me, part of the appeal of the series is characters kids can relate to and situations they might encounter. My 5th grade boy and 3rd grade girl have devoured the graphic novels and really enjoyed them, and they're excited that I've purchased some of the original novels (I don't have my old books anymore, boo!). I'm glad I read these graphic novels -- they were so much fun. ( )

A super sweet story almost like drinking Pepsi after eating cookies. I could see where the story was heading from the get-go, but, thankfully, it managed to happen without the all-embarrassing person 1 having to explain to person 2 a) they are already in a relationship b) they're too old for them c) they were just being kind, and person 2 misinterpreted them scene. Yes, let's have Stacey keep as much dignity as she can.

[rating from personal enjoyment!] ( )

I love reading these series, I think this book is great for girls coming of age. Even though there is romance I think has an innocent way of telling young girls what to expect in teenage life. It shows them examples being nice, friendship and romance.

A so-so story about friendship and summer crushes during a working vacation to the Jersey Shore for two of the babysitters. Mostly, the postcards that served as chapter breaks knocked me out of the story as I thought about how a true adaptation of this story to the modern day would include cell phones and that would radically change large parts of the story as Stacey completely ignored Mary Anne in favor of constantly texting Claudia for advice and affirmation. What happened here was fine, but not interesting enough to keep my mind from wandering. It'll probably go over better with its intended audience. ( )

Stacey and Mary Anne are invited along on the Pike family's beach vacation to help babysit their many children. But a cute lifeguard catches Stacey's eye and she thinks she is in love; meanwhile, Mary Anne feels frustrated that she is watching the children all alone as Stacey flirts.

This was another solid addition to the graphic novels based on the prose series. The girls once again show a number of positive behaviors, including friendship, responsibility, and generosity. Whenever one of them makes a mistake (in this case, Stacey's behavior mooning after boys and ignoring her charges), they admit it and work to rectify it.

Some things from this title show the age of the original books -- for instance, the girls stay in touch over the summer by sending postcards, not texting -- but otherwise it holds up fairly well. I am personally a little surprised by how much freedom is given to the girls to wander the boardwalk alone, to go on dates with boys they only met that week, etc., but perhaps that's just me.

The illustrations are well done, conveying a lot of energy and emotions. I loved the scenic views shown on the postcards, even if the device was a little bit out of date. ( )
