Planting Stories is a sweet book about a woman who emigrates to America to share her childhood stories with the world. It has an abundance of Spanish words in the story, almost full sentences at times, but it creates a connection with our main character. Students can relate to her experiences, and her desire to share her stories could inspire students to read more outside of the classroom, an important task for middle grade teachers. One could read this in an English classroom, again to inspire students to read more or as an introduction to biographies, or could be read in a Spanish or Social Studies classroom about the language and culture of Puerto Rico. This book is just wonderful! As a librarian I might have a special place in my heart for books that talk about how wonderful libraries are but this one has so much more to offer. This picture book biography tells about one of the library greats, Pura Belpré, how she came to NY from Puerto Rico, and how she became a beloved storyteller both at a library and as an author. The biography is peppered with Spanish phrases, and there is a full Spanish language version--a wonderful addition to bilingual story times! I also love that this book backs up what I have told to library patrons, if you can't find a book with the story you want, perhaps it's because you need to write it! There is also a great end note with more information. ( )

This is a picture book tells the story of Pura Teresa Belpre, a New York Librarian, born in Puerto Rico. When she first came to New York and started working in the library she notices there are no folktales in the library from her country. So, she starts to tell these stories during a story time for children. She also sews puppets and begins to act out her stories. Eventually she leaves the library for several years and when she comes back, she notices a change, that her stories are still being told to children in the library. The book is written primarily in English but also contains some Spanish words throughout. It has lovely, vibrant illustrations that bring the story to life. ( )

This book is the non-fiction biography about the life of Pura Belpré. After coming to America in 1921, Pura began working at the New York Public Library as a bilingual assistant. She told many stories from her homeland-- Puerto Rico-- and eventually turned her stories into books. This book teachers readers the importance and impact of storytelling. While this is a non-fiction book, the story is presented in a meaningful way that engages readers. ( )

This would be a wonderful book for intermediate students. It tells the story of the sweet lady named Pura Belpre who immigrated to the United States from Puerto Rico. Belpre began going to and working at the library by her house, and began to realize that there were very little books written in Spanish. She began working to write and tell stories in Spanish through books and puppet shows and went on to travel sharing her stories. She married a musician and returned to the library, continuing to spread her love of writing and storytelling with others. This book is helpful because it can show students the power of books, and the impact stories can have on a person. I would use this book in a read aloud at the beginning of the year, in order to set the tone of the importance of reading and storytelling in my classroom and inspire students to write their stories like Pura Belpre.
