First time I read anything by this author so I didn't know what to expect. I thought I was going to be reading a murder mystery but it surprised me and it was a nice surprise. Linda couldn't believe she was lucky enough to be engaged to a guy like Geoff. There were a few hitches - he needed to divorce his wife who walked out on him 4 years ago but that was almost final and she needed to win his 8 year old son over but nothing insurmontable or so she thought. Then Gabrielle, Geoff's wife shows up mysteriously one morning. Everything escalates from there to Linda's visions, seances, and more. This was a fast read and one I didn't want to put down. ( )

This book has echoes of the movie "Rebecca", with the heroine a dowdy, unsure, self-deprecating young woman who finds herself engaged to an older, refined, handsome professor whose wife walked away from him and their young son several years before. Suddenly, the soon-to-be ex-wife walks back in their lives, bringing with her terrifying nightmares, strange sightings, and a custody battle for her son.

This book is a fast read and it engaged me while I was reading it. The writing style is a bit off-putting though. It's written in present tense so everything is written as though it's happening right then. I suppose the author was trying to increase the sense of immediacy of what was happening, but I just found it off-putting. Read it in one sitting, otherwise you might not pick it back up again. ( )

Cause of Fear is a quick little supernatural mystery / thriller that I figured out really early on. Despite knowing where this was headed and pretty much how we were going to get there, it was still an enjoyable read. I like novels like this that have a story to tell and just tell it without embellishing a whole bunch. No reason to really recommend this one, though if you want something quick to read this will be a quick diversion for you. ( )
