Now a major motion picture starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson! Goodreads Choice Winner, Best Young Adult Fiction of 2019 In this #1 New York Times bestselling novel that's perfect for fans of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, two teens fall in love with just one minor complication--they can't get within a few feet of each other without risking their lives. Can you love someone you can never touch? Stella Grant likes to be in control--even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions. The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn't care less about his treatments, or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he'll turn eighteen and then he'll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals. Will's exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn't feel like safety. It feels like punishment. What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too?… (mais)

Given the hype around this book, I really expected a LOT more from it. I think the movie may be able to save the story, but I have no plans to see it. I hate writing negative reviews, I always say that but there was just so much that irked me about this story.

This novel reads similar to The Fault in Our Stars, not in terms of the plot, but in the way the characters speak, the way they have almost the exact same set up of friendship groups. I don't know if it was to keep this novel in a YA or younger age range but I can tell you right now, teens aren't out here saying "effing" or calling each other "b" and "a-hole", or saying "freaking". No one says "freaking".

The setting was interesting enough, though being so isolated, you would expect a little bit more interaction and knowledge about other patients, even those that aren't part of the immediate friend group. There was none of that. It felt like the only people who existed in the hospital were the two nurses and three main characters. It made it all a little less real, as well as the not-so-strict rules, one kid being a child-prodigy chef, etc. And why, oh, WHY did they try to include a flashback/memory about dressing up as ghosts and visiting the dementia ward? Not only was it incredibly unfunny, I found it hard to believe that kids who were in a similar situation would do such a thing to others.

All in all, would not recommend and would not reread.

The only redeeming sections of the novel were the one tragic moment that is upsetting to anyone no matter how it's written (no spoilers), and the moment at the very end. The rest just felt forced, unreal, and almost like a too-late attempt to jump on John Green's hype. I am cringing saying that, but it just all felt wrong. There is potential, so I hope to see something more in the future but I don't think I'll be trying anything else by this author. ( )

Really great book. I am definitely trying more by the author--I like how she writes. Very authentic. I can't wait to see the movie, good or bad. ( )

Decided to read a YA romance for Valentine's Day this year and this was a cute read! ( )

Five Feet Apart is a tear-jerking story about two fundamentally opposite teens with cystic fibrosis falling in love. The problem with this is that CFers must stay at least six feet apart from each other at all times so they don’t catch each other’s bacteria strains. To make matters worse, Will has B. cepacia, which is drug-resistant and removes anybody with CF from the list of people to receive a lung transplant.

Watching Stella and Will fall in love with each other from each one’s perspective was both heartwarming and upsetting. They could never be together like other couples because of their illness, but they still loved each other and found ways to spend time together. It’s definitely safe to say I cried more than once while reading this. ( )

This is such a good book, and one of the only books to ever make me cry. ( )
