"Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a rare book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas of honey, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a beautiful barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the rare book and in his own life"--… (mais)

Unfortunately, I just didn't like this one as much as I wanted to. I heard mixed things about this book but I had heard so many good things about [b:The Night Circus|9361589|The Night Circus|Erin Morgenstern|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387124618l/9361589._SY75_.jpg|14245059] that I thought I might as well give this one a chance. However, I was mostly just bored with this and I had a very hard time paying attention to the story because I just did not care.

A lot of the time when people talk about [a:Erin Morgenstern|4370565|Erin Morgenstern|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1552589582p2/4370565.jpg] they talk about how beautiful her writing is. This book was nice to listen to but good writing can't save a boring story. I felt totally disinterested in the characters and the plot. I didn't really care about what happened to anyone in the story. I thought Zachery and Dorian and all the others were fine and pretty well written but the way this book was written left me feeling very distant from them.

A lot of other reviewers discuss being confused by the story and while I never felt confused that might just be because I wasn't even paying enough attention to be confused. I definitely didn't try to figure out what all the little stories might mean and I have no interest in trying. I didn't feel like I every really wanted to dig into the imagery of this book and I think that was this books biggest problem.

I'm really sad that I found this to be disappointing but I think maybe some day I will read The Night Circus. It seems like that book is a lot more universally loved. I just didn't really connect with this one. ( )

I am surprised to see that this book has received mixed reviews. I think this book is Erin Morgenstern's magnum opus! It's a triumph of magical realism.

Unlike The Night Circus, which had a great story idea but, in my opinion, was just an average telling of this exciting idea, The Starless Sea has the magical, surrealistic feeling that I was hoping for in The Night Circus.

The plot structure alone of this new novel is fascinating. Morgenstern divides her main storyline, following Zachary Ezra Rawlings (a computer major and video game nerd who discovers a mysterious book that transports him to a new world) with short legends and fables from this same new world of the Starless Sea. The reader uses these short legends as clues to discover where Zachary is, what this new world is like, and learn about a love story more ancient than any before.

A brilliant magnum opus and contribution to the magical realism world. I can't recommend this book enough! ( )

I loved this end stop, pretty much like I knew I would after deeply, dearly being in love with [b:The Night Circus|9361589|The Night Circus|Erin Morgenstern|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387124618l/9361589._SY75_.jpg|14245059]. I definitely feel like I'm going to need to read it a second time before I can talk about everything, but I've been so in love with looping, intricate fairytales for a long time. ( )
