A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! "Celebrates the resilience of girls and the earthshaking power of their friendships. An eerie, unforgettable triumph." --Claire Legrand, New York Times bestselling author of Furyborn "Wilder Girls is so sharp and packs so much emotion in such wise ways. I'm convinced we're about to witness the emergence of a major new literary star." --Jeff VanderMeer, New York Times bestselling author of Annihilation A feminist Lord of the Flies about three best friends living in quarantine at their island boarding school, and the lengths they go to uncover the truth of their confinement when one disappears. This fresh, new debut is a mind-bending novel unlike anything you've read before. It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her. It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything. But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true. 4 STARRED REVIEWS! "Fresh and horrible and beautiful....readers will be consumed and altered by Wilder Girls."-NPR "This thrilling saga...is sure to be one of the season's most talked-about books, in any genre."--EW "The perfect kind of story for our current era." --Hypable "Take Annihilation, add a dash of Contagion, set it at an all-girls' academy, and you'll arrive at Rory Power's occasionally shocking and always gripping Wilder Girls."--Refinery29… (mais)

A good premise, but there were many aspects of the plot that were not explained and really needed to be. ( )

Ah, I think I need some time to process how crazy this book is. The gorgeous, intricate cover appealed to me and it matches the contents of the book in ways I didn't expect it to. I like the comparison another reviewer made to this being the boarding-school-for-girls edition of The Lord of the Flies.
It's kind of a horror novel, kind of an unnatural dystopian, and kind of my worst nightmares come to life. Basically, the adults that are there deserve questionable trust and the girls are trying to survive in a really hard, emotionally wracking situation. I would love a sequel since I felt like I was left hanging with the ending, but otherwise this was a genre I don't normally read and I'm glad I did. ( )

This book was amazing and not at all what I expected. I can honestly say there were so many events that surprised me and I was absolutely hooked. I read the entire book in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. The story was unpredictable and such a unique idea. Hetty, Byatt, and Reese were all so interesting and lovable in their own special ways. I can usually predict what is going to happen in a book after the first couple chapters, but with Wilder Girls I was constantly questioning everything. I loved that I wasn't able to predict what was going to happen, and in a way it helped me relate to Hetty and the other characters in the book because they were in a constant state of confusion and distrust.
And finally, the cover! I loved the cover when I first saw Wilder Girls on here but it is so beautiful in person. If I had seen this cover in a store I definitely would've picked up the book, I'm a sucker for a beautiful cover.

Actual Rating: 4.25 Stars

Oh man, this was really a great read, even though it took me like two months to read. But that's more working in a public library during summer than anything. It feels very much like Lord of the Flies meets Annihilation. I enjoyed the horror aspect of this - you're dropped pretty much immediately into this school where everything and everyone is falling apart. Still not super sure what feminist horror is, or why this book is being classified as it when it's just that the majority of the cast of characters are female, but hey man, I'm not great with genres.

I really wanted to know a little more about what was causing the Tox - this book focuses more on how the characters are surviving the warping of their bodies and their environments. Which was great, don't get me wrong. But we all know how I feel about diseases/parasites/pathology (and if you are a person that doesn't know that, what's up? I'm Kelli. I'll make it about ten minutes into a conversation before bringing one of those topics up) and frankly, I'm probably pretty spoiled by books like Mira Grant's Parasitology series and David Walton's The Genius Plague - though those are written for a different age group. Hetty, Byatt, and Reese go to extremes to figure out the strange disease that has them quarantined at their island boarding school, off the Maine coast. The girls are changing physically, in addition to the mental stress of being isolated with reduced food and supplies. The Tox has taken over the island, infecting the plants, animals, and girls living there. Friendships are forged and tested as survival becomes paramount.

I loved Lord of the Flies when I read it in college and am loving this trend in retellings with gender swaps and modern sensibilities. I first put this in my survival section, but as I read further, I think it fits better in mystery/horror.

P. 121 Byatt: Too bright and too bored and something missing, or perhaps something too much there.
