I read Rayne & Delilah's Midnite Matinee by Jeff Zentner because Zentner is an auto-read author for me. I read The Serpent King because it had come in my first ever Owlcrate box. After that I was hooked. Goodbye Days sealed the deal.

Rayne & Delilah's Midnite Matinee is the first novel that I didn't full on ugly cry for but it was still a great book! It was just different than I had expected it to be.

It wasn't until the end that I got a bit choked up because I could relate so much to Delia. I didn't go to college with the rest of my friends. Long story and was not my choice. I know what it's like to feel left behind even when no one is really at fault. It makes you feel small because you don't have great plans for your life. It makes you feel childish because only babies get upset about being left out.

Graduation is; however, the first real time in your life when you make major life choices. This really resonated throughout Midnite Matinee. I really think Zentner did a great job exploring what it means to be out of high school and all the little things that get lost in the big moment. He really capitalizes on the day to day things that change that get swallowed by the actual act of graduation and freshman year at college.

Rayne & Delilah's Midnite Matinee wouldn't be the first Zentner novel I'd recommend but it's still pretty solid. ( )

I never ceased to be amazed, and grateful, when a book finds me right at the perfect moment that I need it. Zenter's latest novel is that book at this moment. I laughed, I cried, I cringed, I learned a little about myself along with Josie and Delia. I'll end with two gems I just need to record for my own propitiation: "It suddenly hits me, more raw than it ever has before: everything ends. Some things last longer than others, but everything ends. . . I'm glad things end, though. It forces you to love them ferociously while you have them." p. 367 "'Remember that Florida is a land of weirdos and bizarre happenings, and conduct yourselves accordingly.'" p. 227 Words of such veracity and import each. Oh man, I really loved this book. I was actually laughing out loud at points. First, the description of the bassett hound (comparing it to a tan garbage bag - hilarious.). Despite the humor, this book dealt with the emotion that comes from growing up and the change that comes with it perfectly. The sad moments were still sad, but it never felt like emotional whiplash. Also, I love that it harped on how important it is to a) get help when you need it if you're struggling with depression, and b) TAKE YOUR PILLS EVERYDAY!

But, on the opposite side of that - my only qualm with this book was that Delia and her mom started taking antidepressants and were suddenly cured. Obviously the point of the book wasn't to focus on mental health, so long paragraphs about trying out different medications and doses wasn't going to happen. But also, medication doesn't necessarily stop the bad days from coming. It just stops them from hitting as hard or coming as often. I don't know - it's a little piece of the book, and genuinely it's just a little complaint. The rest of it was beautiful and funny and all the other nice words that people used to describe a good book. ( )

I enjoy Jeff Zentner's writing and this book was no different. I loved following the character's as they grew and tested their wings. Zentner does a fabulous job with using 'texting' as a dialogue. An enjoyable book that I would recommend to both young adults and adults. ( )

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It was fun, humourous, and I found both Delia and Josie relatable. It was going great for about 52 percent of the book, and then the humor became repetitive, a storyline with a ton of potential fell off, and the two main characters voices sort of lost distinction. It was still thoroughly entertaining (love Zentners humor and writing style), but it lacked substance in the second act. ( )
