Alison is married to Carl, has a daughter Matilda and lives a happy life or so it seems. She works as a criminal law barrister and has just been given her first murder case. Madeleine is accused of murdering her husband in a very brutal fashion. I have flew through this book and really enjoyed it. The content is dark with themes of murder, domestic abuse, suicide and rape. So the content is raw but the story is so good. Alison's story is so additive. What is she going to do next, will that decision be as bad as the last one she made. Her story had me wanting to read faster to see what was going to happen next. This book at times was unsettling with a lot of the descriptions, the sex especially. I would say this book is on par with Apple Tree Yard. This is a book I have wanted to read for some time and it just got pushed back down my tbr. I'm so glad I have now read the book and it will stay with me for a while. As I said I really enjoyed this book even though the content at times was tough. Loved the twist at the end, which gave the story a satisfactory ending. Wow. A contemporary page-turner with very faulted and believable characters. A binge-drinking barrister and her passive-aggressive house-husband aren’t getting on. She has her first murder case to defend and is trying to juggle that & a squalid affair with a colleague. Fantastic plot with unexpected twists. Tyce’s experience as a barrister adds fascinating, authentic detail. The male characters in this novel are repulsive or weak or both! I don't know what this says about Harriet Tyce's life but we know she worked as a criminal barrister in London for nearly 10 years! That would have to impact one's view of people. It was refreshing to read about a main character whose behaviour is not tidy and clean and admirable, only to discover she has good reason to be the way she is.Not for the sqeamish. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

I think the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that this book takes you from hating to loving the main character and I felt the jump was a bit fast and the transition too unbelievable. ( )
