Growing up in 1980s Niagara Falls - a seedy but magical, slightly haunted place - Jake Baker spends most of his time with his uncle Calvin, a kind but eccentric enthusiast of occult artifacts and conspiracy theories. The summer Jake turns twelve, he befriends a pair of siblings new to town, and so Calvin decides to initiate them all into the 'Saturday Night Ghost Club.' But as the summer goes on, what begins as a seemingly light-hearted project may ultimately uncover more than any of its members had imagined.… (mais)

3.5.

It was a quick, easy read. I liked it. I wasn’t blown away by it but I liked it. ( )

The writing was wonderful, the characters were interesting and likable (I particularly appreciated that Billy and Dove's indigenous heritage didn't come into play as some sort of mystical deus ex machina), the whole "80s small town with a dark history" concepy was done much better than I was expecting, but the actual plot itself left something to be desired.
I think the buildup was so good that I was anticipating something bigger, something supernatural, something that bridged the gap between dimensions, something suitably ghostly and terrifying enough to finish the book off with a nice bang. The actual ending was not any of those things and it felt like a massive letdown.
Generally, most of the times it's revealed that the "supernatural" events in a story can actually be explained by someone being mentally ill, as opposed to any kind of actual otherworldly things that would take the story into paranormal/horror/fantasy/magical realism territory I feel like the author just wussed out of leaning full tilt into the aforementioned genres because they didn't think they could do it, but wanted to try.
This isn't always the case, obviously. There have been fantastic stories of that manner, and as a literary device it can work well. I also understand what Davidson meant to do with this book and the direction he meant to take it in, but I can't shake the feeling that it would have been so much better with some actual element of the paranormal. This book wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be more about the club and the ghost hunting adventures, but it was really about growing up. The characters were interesting and relatable. The uncle's story was sad and hopeful at the same time. If you enjoy coming of age stories about boys that go from naïve childhood to a more grown up understanding of the world over an eventful summer - check this one out. ( )

Well, I'll start with a fun fact : did you know that Nick Cutter and Craig Davidson are the same person! So if you enjoy Craig's work but prefer a little more gore, check out Nick Cutter.

For me, this book didn't really begin until after the 30th page, and from then on in, the story is compelling, unfolding innocently towards the sadness and darker sides of life. At the same time, each part of the story finds a non-perfect, the best we can hope for type of resolution, the type that comes about because of the love and care of others.

While I really enjoyed this book and read it in two days (which is fast for me!), I preferred Cataract City, and Rust and Bones, which in my memory (which might be wrong), drew me in more because the stories felt more realist, albeit despairing.

Anyways, as many people here have said, Craig (I don't why but I feel we are first name basis), has the twist, the knack for creating a story which you can believe in and lose yourself within, which is magic! ( )

This wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but I liked it anyways! Never one to pass up a coming of age story set in the 80s, this hauntingly deep and insightful novel gave me the feels. Well written and touching with a nice little twist, this one is short enough to bump to the top of your TBR list! ( )

The Brain--is wider than the Sky--
For--put them side by side--
The one the other will contain
With ease--and You beside

The Brain is deeper than the sea--
For--hold them--Blue to Blue--
The one the other will absorb
As Sponges--Buckets--do--

The Brain is just the weight of God--
For--Heft them--Pound for Pound--
And they will differ--if they do--
As Syllable from Sound--
