Uhtred of Bebbanburg has won back his ancestral home but, threatened from all sides by enemies both old and new, he doesn't have long to enjoy the victory. In Mercia, rebellion is in the air as King Edward tries to seize control. In Wessex, rival parties scramble to settle on the identity of the next king. And across the country invading Norsemen continue their relentless incursion, ever hungry for land. Uhtred finds himself once again torn between his two heritages. For decades, Uhtred has stood at the intersection between Pagan and Christian, between Saxon and Viking, between the old world he was born into and the new world being forged around him. But as the winds of change gather pace, the pressure on Uhtred as father, as politician and as warrior grows as never before.… (mais)

By now, I am quite used to the Grumpy Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and so is the Author. The now ageing Lord of Bebbenburg is having to deal with some of the problems of those who succeed by tenth century standards. A lot of people want him to die, and a lot of the rest ofthe population are simply indifferent. England is steadily moving towards its unification, and small nobility, well, middle sized movers and shakers like Uhtred, are facing challenges to their authority. The freebooting community raises up a challenger, Skoll, and of course, the preservation of England's unifier, Athelstan, needs to be dealt with. We get a good look at the difficulties of attacking a well sited fort, and Cornwell's usual dislike of organized religion. And, he does it well. This book is worth reading, and minor characters get some development. ( )

Blasted through this on audio book on a long holiday drive. SO GOOD. Cornwell knows his characters inside and out. Sometimes, the violence treads the line for me (and I have a strong stomach). But it's never gratuitous and certainly reflects the time. And sometimes it's drop dead funny (Uhtred cleaning his bloody blade on a church cloth is everything). When Uhtred, son of Uhtreed, disses the Catholic church and mercilessly roasts the pompous, pious priests I start hooting with laughter. Uhtred has really grown as a character (though my heart belongs to Gather Beoca and Finan, the Irish swordsman). Cornwell is a master writer, using every tool (and especially humor). A great holiday immersion. ( )

(5) The umpteenth installment of the 'The Last Kingdom' series from 9th century British lore. The isle of Britain is almost united under one Christian king except in the North - the hold outs: we have out protagonist warlord Uhtred in Bebbanburg - an independent pagan contractor of sorts though closely allied to the Saxon King's family; and the wild Norseman who filter down from Scotland to try and take over land. They are united under the Wolf King Skoll - yet another fearful pagan warrior. Almost indistinguishable from other bad guys in the series it is just not worth a description of this ultimately vanquished foe. Uhtred and Skoll's men fight each other instead of turning on their common enemy King Edward . . . Men, always idiots.

This installment did not advance the plot and like the last several books (~3-5 since Alfred died) is lackluster. I don't have much else to say - I am almost done reading these regardless of how many more are written. I do look forward however to the lush television adaptation which I think might be better than the books (much like the TV version of 'Outlander') ( )

This series continues to stay very worthwhile, although too many Athels threaten the barrel, I mean, landscape. Lots of scheming followed by excellent battle scenes make these books a fun read. The characters remain quite interesting, particularly the women, and the historical skeins are linked nicely within the story. ( )

A solid read, though dragging a little in the second half. Still, absolutely worth it just for the bit that explains how Manchester got its name. I'm still laughing over that one... ( )
