This book tells the story of a group of animal friends, who have many human characteristics (write with chalk, talk to a human etc.). There is Phatty the cat and his two brothers, Clyde the cat and Stanley the dog, Phatty's best friend, Payaso and others that he meets in Central Park. They live in a New York City apartment building, overlooking Central Park. When they are threatened by a mean looking hawk, they decide they need to protect themselves. Phatty was an overweight cat, who is afraid of just about everything. He is teased and bullyed by the birds outside the window. Payaso lives across the hall and is a walking encyclopedia. He is only there a few months each year, and this is his time back home. Clyde and Payaso do not get along and are constantly bickering. Phatty, tired of being a scaredy cat, sneaks out of the apartment to find the zoo keeper and turn Crawler, the hawk in. The others, find out he has gone and head out after him. What an adventure they will have. I'm not going to share anymore of the plot in this review, but suffice it to say, that Phatty really is a nice cat and teaches the others he meets along the way some very important lessons. This is a story about friendship, loyalty, being yourself, bullying, understanding, compassion and developing self-esteem. There are a couple of black and white full page illustrations in each chapter that will add to the enjoyment of the story. I think the lessons are a bit obvious and with the writing level geared to children 8 to 10, they might give up on it, but if they keep going it is a fun adventure with animals instead of human characters. The publisher, iUniverse, generously provided me with a copy of this book to read. The rating, opinions and ideas are my own. Picture Phatty is a tabby cat who lives a luxurious life with his brothers Clyde and Stanley in a New York City apartment overlooking Central Park. Phatty is usually scared and uncoordinated but is friendly and caring. Every year Phatty looks forward to his friend Payaso visiting for the summer. Payaso is well traveled, knows different languages and a lot about how things work. One day, an escaped hawk from teh zoo, Crawler comes to visit Phatty's window. He threatens to hurt Phatty, Clyde and Stanly and steal their mother's jewels. Phatty decides to overcome his fear and take care of Crawler. He escapes to Central Park in hopes of finding Crawler's zoo keeper. Phatty's friends race after him with the help of a boy named Max who can communicate in a different way and understands the animals. Together, the friends will go on an adventure overcoming their fears. An exciting adventure through the eyes of animals that revolves around conquering your fears, friendship and being your best self. In the vein of A Pet's Life, The Adventures of Phatty and Payaso: Central Park focuses on what the pets do when the humans are not around. I think the middle grade audience would enjoy the variety of characters and their interactions. Phatty is encouraged by his friends to come up with ideas to fend off Crawler as well as overcome his fears. When Phatty is exploring Central Park he is able to learn even more about himself through the eyes of the many animals that live there in addition to making some new friends. I loved the addition of Max as well, a boy who seems have autism, though it is never mentioned. He has trouble communicating with people, but can talk with animals just fine. He shines as he helps the pets solve a series of problems as they track Phatty through Central Park. Another important part of the story was the treatment of Crawler's character. Although he was the bully of the story, the characters were able to realize the deeper reason for his actions and help him rather than retaliate. Overall, a fun animal adventure with plenty of life lessons for a middle grade reader. This book was received for free in return for an honest review. With cats to cuddle and adore, this book goes on great adventures and hits upon important lessons about friendship and bullying. Phatty has a wonderful cat life. He lays on his favorite chair and everything in life is good. When a hawk appears and threatens to hurt Phatty, his friends and rob his master's jewelry, Phatty is besides himself. Luckily, his friends are ready to help him, and an adventure is underway. I'm not usually a huge friend of stories with animals as the main characters, but these cats had so much personality that it's hard not to get pulled in. Phatty is in a league all of his own with a bit of an attitude, laziness, a humongous heart, determination, loyal to a fault, and yet, a chicken in his own right. His friends each are full of their own pizzazz, making this a fun story. The plot moves along quickly and takes several unexpected twists and turns. At times, there was a bit much going on, but considering this is the beginning to a series, that leaves wonderful ties to continue with later on. There are a few logic holes like when Phatty suddenly writes a note in English. But these are easy to overlook and fantasy takes control. A real treat can be found in the illustrations—the book has several nice big ones. These add just the right amount of fun to the book and deserve bonus points. The messages come through loud and clear without being preachy. There is bullying, but also wonderful moments of friendship. The author does a great job allowing each character to have their own problems in these areas, so that it doesn't only concentrate on one or two completely. Even the 'cool' cats, like Payaso, has self-doubt at moments. The way these problems are handled is encouraging and leaves a smile on the face. Summed up, this is a fun read which especially cat friends will enjoy. I received a complimentary copy and found it so endearing that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
