Midwestern movie house owner Virgil Wander is "cruising along at medium altitude" when his car flies off the road into icy Lake Superior. Virgil survives but his language and memory are altered and he emerges into a world no longer familiar to him. Awakening in this new life, Virgil begins to piece together his personal history and the lore of his broken town, with the help of a cast of affable and curious locals--from Rune, a twinkling, pipe-smoking, kite-flying stranger investigating the mystery of his disappeared son; to Nadine, the reserved, enchanting wife of the vanished man; to Tom, a journalist and Virgil's oldest friend; and various members of the Pea family who must confront tragedies of their own. Into this community returns a shimmering prodigal son who may hold the key to reviving their town. With intelligent humor and captivating whimsy, Leif Enger conjures a remarkable portrait of a region and its residents, who, for reasons of choice or circumstance, never made it out of their defunct industrial district. Carried aloft by quotidian pleasures including movies, fishing, necking in parked cars, playing baseball and falling in love, Virgil Wander is a swift, full journey into the heart and heartache of an often overlooked American Upper Midwest by a "formidably gifted" (Chicago Tribune) master storyteller.… (mais)

This is a quiet book about a guy recovering from a brain injury in his small Minnesota town.

While I can't remember any details now, I do remember that I very much enjoyed Enger's book "Peace Like A River" so I was excited to finally get this one from my library. I wasn't disappointed - the whole book felt to me like being snuggled under a blanket while sitting in my favorite chair even when I wasn't. It was just a pleasure.

There are lots of quirky characters and a slow moving, somewhat dreamy plot but more than anything it just felt good to live in Virgil Wander's world for a bit instead of in the real world of 2019 that seems to be just non-stop bad news.

If you need lots of action this is probably not your book. If you think you might enjoy flying a kite on a winter afternoon or staying up late to secretly watch Butch Cassidy on the big screen in an old school vintage movie theater, you'll probably enjoy this as much as I did.

It’s a cliché to say the latest and greatest novel is a modern classic. You can safely place Virgil Wander by Leif Enger in the true masterpiece modern classic category. This rich book that centers on the life of Virgil the recent recipient of an accident that leaves his vocabulary of adjectives impaired is full of treasured metaphors, images, and spine-tingling page turning plot lines. Virgil owns The Empress, an old movie theater in Greenstone, Minnesota. The father, Rune, of legendary missing Alec Sandstrom baseball, surfer and pilot drives the narrative. Rune is obsessed with flying kites and thorough out the novel, the image of the various kites fill your head with mystic beauty. The other recurring theme relates to capturing a giant sturgeon. This abashedly lovely book is a brilliant way to start 2019 ( )

Quiet story of a small town in northern Minnesota. Full of quirky, flawed, but caring people. ( )

Painting evocative pictures with words

When it comes to master storytellers Leif ranks at the top of the list. Similar to Richard Russo, he engages the reader with his remarkable characters who in and of themselves are unique. A fan of small town stories, it's rare to have such an array of memorable scenes in each chapter. I immediately fell in love with his word smithing and found myself immersed in the story world often for hours on end. His unique characters include Virgil Wander, a city clerk and owner of a failing movie theater, a teen boy that surfs Lake Superior, and a Nordic kite builder among others. Virgil gives us hope, reminds us of our humanity and spins a tale that's worthy of the Pulitzer. Of all my favorites, this story took me by surprise and rose quickly to the top of my list! ( )

Good thing I had book club to explain the ending to me. This book didn't have much plot, was full of lots of flowery language, but had some charming parts. ( )

With lovely defiance she declared, “I am not wasting one more minute on subpar cocoa.”

The Empress didn’t fill but got gradually less empty. If this continued into the summer I’d be at risk of turning a profit.
