3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book, I just felt there was a little too much going on. It also veered away from what I felt was the main story of the scythes, Rowan and Citra. ( )

Honestly, not as good as the first two. I was struggling to get through it, mainly because my interest kept wandering and mainly because it was SO LONG. I don't have a problem with long books, but when they're that long, they need to be engaging all the way through (Like Children of Time, another 600 page book I recently read). And the different time periods could have been better marked - maybe by putting the year in the chapter heading, rather than leaving the reader to try to keep them all in their head.

The best thing about this book is how infuriating Goddard is. I was dreading reading his missives and learning his new rules, which is a mark of how wonderfully drawn his character is and how Shusterman gets into his head. Unfortunately, his character never really "came to justice" - the reader is robbed of the glee and catharsis that comes with a good reckoning, especially once everyone finds out the true depths of Goddard's evil/psychopathy. The whole world is just going to forget that Goddard sabotaged the Thunderhead's space efforts? No one is going to want justice for all the people he unjustly gleaned?

Also good: Greyson as the Toll, coming into his own and learning how to be an effective and powerful symbol, and Scythe Morrison as his bodyguard; and the look into the different societies (the Charter Collectives [do we know all seven? There's the LoneStar Region, Madagascar, the RossShelf region...], the Tonists, the SubSahara region).

But, I mean, I finished this yesterday and already details are slipping out of my mind. ( )

"Cirrus was the child of Greyson, Jeri, and the Thunderhead."

This had to be the funniest line in the whole series!

Anyone who has read this series before knows it's uniqueness and it's ingenuity. Right from the beginning, I have to admit that this last book was a bit confusing with respect to the time period. The back and forth take a while to get accustomed to, but you do ultimately realise that all the events are pieces of a ver big puzzle.

To see the whole picture, you need to finish the book.

Only then will you understand the importance of each individual piece and human and Scythe. The ending gives you the closure that you were seeking and leaves you satisfied with how it all comes together.

Although I would have loved to see more of Citra (Scythe Anastasia) and Rowan (Scythe Lucifer), I understand the need of the author to give due diligence to the character's when required.

Greyson Tolliver - The Toll (A part of his surname as you can see), the only one with whon Thunderhead talks to anymore becomes a key player in the dynamics of his book. Starting with his brave attempt at saving the lives of Scythes Anastasia and Curie in Thunderhead, Greyson goes down the road of bravery, honesty and goes on to become a mythical figure guiding all those who shun the Scythes. I finally finished the Scythe trilogy! I read the first two a long time ago, so I had to re-read them. I don't plan on saying much because it's a final book.

The Thunderhead is silent. The Scythes resemble a gang--doing as they please. Only one hears the voice of the Thunderhead.

It's been three years and Rowan and Citra are found, but it's dangerous. As with the plot from the other novels, Rowan and Citra are separated allowing more of the world to be shown. Grayson Tolliver becomes the prophet--the voice of the Thunderhead in a way. His "manager" may care more about power than purpose. Of course, if it's known that Citra and Rowan are alive, they'll be in danger, for they know the truth about what happened three years ago. Scythe Goddard has transformed the way Scythes operate and freedom for scythes reigns.

This novel isn't about Rowan and Citra. It's about unchecked power and the toll it takes on humanity and civilization. Can one entity or can one savior speaking for the entity save a lost civilization or is it too late? I have to admit the ending surprised me. I would say why, but it would ruin the book. Enjoy. ( )

For me anyway, a satisfying conclusion to the Arc of a Scythe trilogy. While the ending might be a bit predictable based on the deep sea rescue and resuscitation of two major characters at the outset, it was the journey there that was enjoyable. Scythe Robert Goddard is consolidating his power of MidMerica, essentially subjugating the various regions to his dominion, except for the Lone Star region and a few others (SubSahara, SouthMerica.) Meanwhile, Greyson Tolliver and the Tonists seem to be the only meaningful opposition to Goddard's megalomania, with the passive participation of the AI, Thunderhead. The cloaked project in the Atoll was a good subplot, and I liked the gender-fluid captain, Jeri, who has been excoriated as a token by many readers. S/he plays an important role in keeping major characters safe, and had a strong moral compass. ( )
