Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story. Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic ... and then her bus drives away. Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be. What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.… (mais)

I've struggled with reading Reese Witherspoon's book club picks in previous months. Usually, my number one complaint is that the books are slow in the beginning and it takes way too many pages to get to one of many reveals. This book, however, has something new around every corner. The resolutions Laurie makes at the beginning of each year are relatable and make me groan "mood!" The friendship dynamic, along with the love triangle complication, have the reader feeling like they could easily become one of the characters in the book. Themes in this book continue to appear page after page, including family, friends, loss, tragedy, new beginnings, and a classic love story appeal. The author references many pop culture phenomena from the various years, which reminds the reader that, "Oh yeah, Justin Bieber, Twilight and the Hunger Games were all major concerns for teens in the 2000s." I am giving this book a 4/5 and I highly recommend it to anyone starting this new year with a new reading goal, because even though it is called "One Day in December," it is a perfect new year read. I thought this book would never end.

It was like an American soap opera except someone had to drink copious amounts of alcohol to push the story along. Everything for 400 pages was made to keep them apart. To the point when they finally do get together you don't care anymore because you have no idea why someone would find this ass of a man to be the ONE.

It is also so funny when the protagonist doesn't think she is beautiful enough for her handsome rich husband (the one she dumps because he works in another country to be with someone else who works in another country) when people describe her as looking just like Elizabeth Taylor. This is an unbelievable trope that should die.

By the time I got to the end of the book, all I could do was gasp, "Finally." ( )

One of the prompts I had for a round of TBR Monopoly was to read a book that had been gifted to me. During the last round of OTSP Secret Sister that I participated in my lovely sis Victoria sent me One Day in December by Josie Silver.

I am such a sucker for endings. If this book didn't have such a great ending I think it might have ended up as a three star read. This is definitely a slow burn. I cannot stress that enough. There's also a lot that happens from Point A to Point B. You might want to know that this book spans years in the characters's lives. At times it was frustrating. At the end of it all though I liked the experience.

I felt so bad for both Jack and Laurie. They were in such a tough spot. I can certainly imagine how it seemed like the universe was mocking them. One of the biggest issues I had with One Day in December is that Jack and Laurie clearly never stopped having feelings for each other. It made the rest of the book feel a bit icky. It felt like the continued feelings tainted all of their other relationships. Nobody wins in that situation.

In hindsight the ending really saved One Day in December by Josie Silver. I don't know if it would be worth the journey for other readers.

That's the thing about flowers, isn't it? They're lush and extravagant and demand your attention, and you think they're the most exquisite thing, but then in the shortest time they're not very lovely at all. They wilt and they turn the water brown, and soon you can't hold on to them any longer.
