"What do you do when you meet your soul mate? No wait...that's too easy. What do you do when you meet your soul mate and have to spend a lifetime loving him in secret? I'll tell you what you do.You lie."RENRen was eight when he learned that love doesn't exist-that the one person who was supposed to adore him only cared how much he was worth. His mother sold him and for two years, he lived in terror. But then...he ran.He thought he'd run on his own. Turned out, he took something of theirs by accident and it became the one thing he never wanted and the only thing he ever needed. DELLAI was young when I fell in love with him, when he switched from my world to my everything. My parents bought him for cheap labour, just like they had with many other kids, and he had the scars to prove it. At the start, he hated me, and I could understand why.For years he was my worst enemy, fiercest protector, and dearest friend. But by the end...he loved me.The only problem was, he loved me in an entirely different way to the way I loved him.And slowly, my secret drove us apart.… (mais)

This book is perfect. Don't read it when you want something light though. ( )

So,I have been confused that should I rate this book 3.5 or 4 or 5,I have been changing my rating a lot and finally I have selected 4.5 stars,I was going to give 3.5 stars but I have read book 2 and I am writing this after that, because that book made me comfortable with Ren and Della's story.
I love Pepper Winters books , no matter how lengthy the book is ,I never skip single line because everything is beautifully written and I love reading it and it's worth it.
To be honest I didn't understand at starting that was this book a romance book or a brother and sister's book. Time to time I had to remind myself that Della and Ren are not brother and sister.Regardless romance or not,I would have rated this book rated this book 5 stars because the story and plot is awesome. The background setting is so good and I loved Della and Ren's adventures. At times I felt author could have avoided making them look as bro and sis or Ren as parent. But I got comfortable with their feelings at a point.(mind you they weren't in any type of romantic relationship in this entire book.)and I started getting comfortable somewhere around chapter 50 which was almost at end .I understood what Della felt for Ren,what I didn't understand was Ren's feelings towards her but that got fine again somewhere near chapter 50 and in next book it is explained nicely. What I liked most about this book was the time when they were growing together ,when they stayed alone together,it is worth 5 stars. It is beautifully written.Everything was good, just it took time for me to be comfortable with Ren and Della deemed to be romantic partners .
Correct me if I am wrong but when Ren took Della ,she was one and he was 10 but in book it's showed as their age difference is 10 when actually it's 9years
and also Della started going to school at age 5 but she completed her high school by 18 but that can be ignored .
P.S:I can't believe that Pepper Winters wrote this book so fast ,I thought it would have required a lot of thinking and planning. ( )

This book has been on my TBR for months now. Anytime this author puts up a blurb about a new book it gets added. I don't even have to know what it is about. She is an automatic one-click author for me. That being said, she did not disappoint. This is a heartbreaking story. It is bittersweet and yet hauntingly beautiful at the same time. It is a story about survival in the literal and figurative sense. It is about discovering that even amongst ugliness there is still beauty to come out of it.

If you are looking for a darker romance that this author is known for, then be prepared. This is not that story. It is uniquely different and masterfully written by an author pours her passion out via her words on paper. She makes you feel. Give this book a chance even if it is not your normal cup of tea. ( )

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book.

Ren is ten years old when he escapes from the farm where he has been enslaved for two years. On his way out, he thoughtlessly picks up a backpack containing the very last thing he needs: his owner's baby daughter, Della. Ren can't bring himself to treat her with the heartlessness he has been subjected to, and so he keeps her. For almost seventeen years, he raises Della as his real family. She's the only person he has ever loved. As Della becomes an adult, Ren realizes to his horror that their familial relationship is growing into something else. Narrated by both Ren and Della as they look back on their life together and reflect on their decisions and mistakes, I was reminded a lot of "Wuthering Heights." Ren is like Heathcliff, with his intense rage and feral love for his "sister" Della (Cathy), who can't help but charm everyone she meets with her beauty and natural intelligence. I felt instense frustration and hope and love for two very real people who go through hell alongside each other and as a result are meant to be together, but are kept apart by societal expectations, miscommunications, and the unusualness of their relationship. I hope that their journey doesn't end in them destroying themselves and almost everyone around them.
This story is not happy. It is not light, it is not sweet, and, since it is part one of two, it definitely doesn't end on a HEA. There are mentions of child slave labor, severe abuse, and homelessness. Your heart will definitely break for the protagonists. And then it will break some more. However, this story contains the barest, rawest form of love, which makes for an unforgettable reading experience. If you're looking for a story that will truly tear at your emotions and draw you into a relationship unlike any other, this is it. I am awaiting impatiently the conclusion of Ren and Della's story.
