For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. She's barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark. But Kya is not what they say. Abandoned at age ten, she has survived on her own in the marsh that she calls home. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life lessons from the land, learning from the false signals of fireflies the real way of this world. But while she could have lived in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world -- until the unthinkable happens.… (mais)

O Sol é para Todos de Harper Lee (BookshelfMonstrosity)
BookshelfMonstrosity: Though much about these novels is dissimilar, both offer a historical Southern setting and a farcical trial that illuminates the small-minded nature of a town's inhabitants. Both atmospheric novels also feature young female protagonists who come of age under challenging circumstances.… (mais)

I found this book to be heart wrenching. The story was deep, and despite being hard to read at times, I never really wanted to put the book down (but classes get in the way, sadly). Kya’s journey is touching, and it takes many twists and turns until the end. ( )

The bones are here. A perfect setting, a dysfunctional family, a scrappy young girl and her rag-tag friends and benefactors. And then wooden dialog and bizarrely inserted poetry is thrown in, and you’ve got yourself a mediocre book with the most absurd court scenes you could possibly imagine. I’ll give it 3 stars because I really enjoyed Part One. ( )

A perfectly average title with some problematic characters and completely unrealistic plot devices. The atmosphere is good, but when it comes down to it this is just meh. ( )

Hello, I'm Mr. Late To The Party. Nice to meet you. I finally got around to reading this book which I feel like I've seen on lists of books to read and best sellers since around the turn of the century. Obviously not that long ago but still.... Anyway I finally got it via the library and it turned out to be a wonderfully immersive read. World building is usually talked about in the realm of Fantasy and Science Fiction but the world building in this book is fantastic. Not building so much since it truly exists but I guess more world revealing. I will not go into the plot (as anyone who has ever read a review of mine knows I despise spoilers with the red hot passion of a thousand suns) but the story is wonderful and takes the reader on an interesting and involving trip. But the ability of Ms. Owens to create the world of the swamp is just amazing. I have no real personal experience with the geography she is describing but I felt like I was there. Kya, our main character, is a wonderful piece of original creating and I found myself totally invested in her thoughts and actions. There may be a bit of a problem with some stock characters in the supporting players (high school quarterback, etc.) but I forgave most of it as they are there to support our main characters and that includes the setting which is as much of a character as anyone. This is another timely novel with great observations that ring true like "not one of our churches or community groups offered her food or clothes. Instead we labeled and rejected her because we thought she was different." Wow does that sound familiar. And as we see macho posers dominate too many discussions, I loved this description of the lesson a dad had imparted to his son, "...remembered his dad's definition of a man; one who can cry freely, feel poetry and opera in his heart, and do whatever it takes to defend a woman." One might quibble with the wording of the last part but man is that a noble sentiment. This is a fantastic book (no revelation there, again my name is Mr. Late To The Party) and one that will stick with me for a long time. And extra points awarded for mentioning the wonderful breakfast restaurant Stack 'em High even though I don't think there is a location in the spot she notes. Such good pancakes.... ( )

Nominally a whodunit, the mystery here is the solitary, lyrical life of an abandoned young woman in Carolina's coastal marshes. She observes nature keenly, sees townsfolk as predatory and reacts in kind.
