"The diplomatic mission from Earth to World ended in disaster, as the Earth's scientists discovered that the Worlders were not the scientifically advanced culture they believed. Though they brought a limited quantity of the vaccine against the deadly spore cloud, there was no way to make enough to vaccinate more than a few dozen, and the Earth scientists and surviving diplomats fled back to Earth. Once home, after the twenty-eight-year gap caused by their transit through space, they find an Earth changed almost beyond recognition. In the aftermath of the spore cloud plague, the human race has been reduced to a few million isolated survivors. The knowledge brought back by Marianne Jenner and her staff may not be enough to turn the tide of ongoing biological warfare" --… (mais)

This was my favorite book of the trilogy. It provides what I think is a very powerful conclusion to the entire story arc. It keeps on the sciency aspect of the whole story, which was my favorite aspect of this series. Character development was always a bit of "meh" for me and here too, the main character of the first book takes a back seat. But overall, I read all three books back to back because they are engrossing. ( )

This is the 3rd book of the Yesterday's Kin trilogy. I'd read the original novella, "Yesterday's Kin" (which was OK I gave it 3 stars on Amazon), completely missed the 1st book of the trilogy, read and liked book 2 (which I didn't review) and now I also liked book 3. There was a bit of similarity between this and the 2nd book: people cooped up in a small space, conflict between groups, family dynamics: but enough new story to make it good novel on its own.

Marianne Jenner and most of the crew that went to World in the 2nd book, returned to Earth. They had learned that while the trip to World had only taken 3 subjective days, 28 years had passed on World. The same for the return trip. 28 years had gone by on Earth and the Earth had changed almost beyond recognition. And their return only added to the problems since the cure for the deadly space-borne virus they encountered on World had unexpected consequences on Earth.

I was a bit concerned when with about 50 pages to go, the story didn't seem to be coming to a conclusion. Often this means one of two things, either the author is planning on a sequel or the ending will be rushed. Since this was supposed to be the conclusion of the trilogy I didn't expect a sequel. And it was a bit rushed at the end but the whole arc of the story came together at the end in a satisfactory manner. The ending certainly leaves the path open for another story. If Nancy Kress thinks there's more to be wrung out of these characters or the setting, I'll read it.

This was a god read and you could probably read it as a stand-alone novel but I'd recommend you read the first two installments first. You can probably skip the novella as I understand that it is entirely incorporated into the first book. ( )
